Taliban Morality Police Detention of Aid Workers

The Taliban’s morality police acted fast. They briefly detained about twenty aid workers at a reception center near the Afghan border with Iran. The reason? They accused these people of not meeting the country’s beard length requirements. This came out, apparently, through sources cited by AFP, though it's hard to trust those things sometimes.

The Taliban authorities in Kabul run everything now. It’s all based on a very strict reading of Islamic law. Men are supposed to grow beards longer than a fist. That’s the baseline rule they operate under.

This whole incident reportedly happened Saturday, right at the Islam Qala border crossing in western Afghanistan. A spot that links the country directly with Iran. It’s a key transit point.

These workers were involved in humanitarian work. They were partnering with groups like the United Nations. They were working at that facility when officials from the Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice the morality police stepped in.

Internal communications leaked, or so the report says. It showed why they were taken away. The men simply didn't have long enough beards. Some had been trimmed down, shaved, breaking whatever Taliban regulations were in place.

The International Organisation for Migration offered a statement on this. They said the detained people were "national male staff members from UN implementing partner organisations" working at that border center.

But things got messy there too. Some of these workers got released later that same day, Saturday. The rest? They were freed the following day. It’s all very uneven.

The Taliban itself hasn't officially confirmed any of this detention news. Of course they haven't.

Yet, there’s a different perspective coming from inside. Ziauddin Taib oversees these morality police operations in Herat province. He pushed back against claims that NGO workers had been arrested.

He said clearly: "No one from NGOs has been arrested or imprisoned."

But the picture is complicated. Taib admitted something else. Morality police personnel had detained five government employees, men from different departments, because their beards didn't meet the standard. Just because they deny NGO arrests doesn't erase that reality.

Still, another aid worker who was familiar with what happened told AFP something different. They said around twenty employees from various service agencies operating right at the border facility were taken away by these officers and moved to Kohsan district before being released. Anonymity was important for them; security concerns made them stay silent.

It just shows how things operate on the ground.

This is all tied up in the strict enforcement of Taliban social rules. Since they took control back in August 2021, the Taliban have been steadily pushing these regulations. They interpret Islamic law to enforce it. And that includes appearance. Rules about men’s grooming. Beard length being one of them. Officials have previously stated a beard should be at least as long as a clenched fist.

The Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice is really visible in this push. It watches dress codes, public behavior, everything religious observance.

It's worth remembering where things were before. Afghanistan is deeply religious. Muslim majority. But back when they didn’t have Taliban control? Especially in big cities, people had much more freedom over how they looked. Grooming was largely a personal choice then. Men grew beards either by choice or just to avoid running into trouble with the fighters. A different time entirely.
