Standoff at Gurudwara in Nagrasu, Uttarakhand Involves Nihangs and Political Dialogue

That whole standoff at the gurudwara in Nagrasu, Uttarakhand’s Rudraprayag district it just kept going on Monday. Four Nihangs there, swords and spears, they were holding onto the place. They demanded four people be let out. These guys had been arrested over some parking mess back in Chamoli, from June 16th.

Apparently, a whole group of them had stormed the shrine. Took one Sikh devotee hostage right on the roof. Just to get their buddies released. It was chaos.

The police were there too. A heavy force outside that gurdwara after it started Saturday evening, June 20th. They said they got the Uttarakhand DIG-Law and Order involved. Investigations were being directed.

Meanwhile, up in Delhi, Bhagwant Mann the Punjab CM was talking on the phone with his counterpart in Uttarakhand, Pushkar Singh Dhami. He was pushing for dialogue. Trying to sort it out through talking.

Mann offered help from Punjab government if things got too hot.

Dhami, he told reporters on Monday, something about impartiality. Said Devbhoomi Uttarakhand respects everyone. All faiths. He brought up the sacred sites Hemkund Sahib, Nanakmatta Sahib, Reetha Sahib. Places established by their Gurus. It felt like a political shove, trying to put everything into this broad cultural acceptance thing.

“Respecting all faiths is part of our state’s culture,” Dhami said. He made it sound like a statement about values, not just politics.

Back on the ground, there was a lot happening with the visiting Nihangs. They started by going into the Gurudwara. Took two devotees. One even a ‘sevadar’. Allegedly, this happened after some argument with the management committee during langar that free kitchen they have everywhere.

By Monday evening? Three of them actually left the place. Four were still locked inside. It’s hard to track what happens in these situations.

Inspector Swaroop from the Garhwal range said something different about those incidents. He denied any real link between Nagrasu and Chamoli stuff. Said they were just unrelated.

But you had the initial incident, didn't you? Back on June 16th. A group of Nihang pilgrims heading back after seeing Sri Hemkund Sahib Gurudwara the highest Sikh shrine in Uttarakhand ran into trouble with some locals. They clashed. Swords came out. Four locals got hurt. One pilgrim got injured too during the whole standoff.

Then all four were arrested for that altercation. Further investigation? That’s still happening. It just seems like these issues keep layering on top of each other.
