Work-Life Balance and Corporate Expectations in India

You know how it is. Even after working for twelve hours straight, some working professionals just log off early. It’s not uncommon these days.

Someone posted something online about this exact situation. They mentioned that a client actually reported to their company management. They said the team decided they had to log off at nine PM. That whole thing really kicked off a huge discussion about what is even expected in corporate life here in India.

The person who shared it, posting on Reddit, explained the setup. Their US-based client brought this up. They escalated concerns to senior management because people were logging off at nine. It’s weird, right? They logged in at nine thirty in the morning. The title of their post was just tagged: “9:30 am to 9 pm is tagged as early log off as per the client.”

“Is This The New Normal?” that was the core question they were throwing out there.

They went on to explain the grind. They said their day is absolutely packed. Scheduled meetings, unscheduled calls popping up constantly. Not even room for a proper break. It’s relentless.

“We work continuously from nine thirty with no real breaks,” they wrote. “We can’t take a proper lunch break. We log off at nine, and the client isn't happy about it.” That was the feeling.

Then there was another bit of stuff. They brought up an incident involving a colleague. Someone who was on a notice period. Apparently, that person was asked to keep working past seven PM. And then they were reported when that person didn’t comply with what was expected. It doesn't stop there. Another colleague got pulled in. They had been asked to stay late, but then they weren't following the new expectation.

Internet Asks The Employee To Switch. That title just sums up the mood.

This post really blew up things about work-life balance and what companies expect from people, especially in Indian offices. A lot of people argued that working from nine in the morning until nine at night already burns everyone out. There is no space left for personal life.

One user jumped in with a tough take. “No, it’s not normal. Either you speak for yourself or switch.” People who just can't switch, they end up normalizing this mess. It becomes the accepted way of doing things.

Someone suggested starting later in the morning? The response was immediate and sharp. No option for that either. Their daily calls start at nine thirty. And then there’s the micromanagement. They get updates every two hours. If there isn't instant progress, they get questioned about why it is taking too long. It feels suffocating.

Another comment came in offering advice. “If you have leverage, escalate to his boss.” Make it clear that if this pace doesn’t stop, you are leaving.

Then someone brought up the client angle again. They said some of those capitalist US clients operate this way. They want maximum return on their investments. And they seem to know there are no real options for employees. But then another voice came in. EU clients? Those ones seemed better regarding work-life balance. That was a contrast thrown into the mix.

And then, just personally. Someone shared an experience that mirrored this whole thing. They decided to quit. Said it happened while working for one of those big MNCs. Folks were demanding daily standup calls at ten o'clock. Their shift started at two. So basically, they used to work from ten until eleven on average. They left a few months later. It just felt like the only way out sometimes.
