Kunal Shah Named Global Head for WhatsApp After Leading CRED

Meta just named Kunal Shah , the founder of that fintech firm CRED , as the new global head for WhatsApp . It’s one of those big appointments, you know? An Indian entrepreneur taking a spot at the top of the technology world.

Will Cathcart, who’s been running the messaging platform since 2019, made the announcement on Monday. He posted it on X.

He tweeted something about personal news. About stepping back after nearly seven years leading WhatsApp. He said he was excited to share who would handle delivering simple, reliable, private messaging globally. Apparently, WhatsApp is in a really strong spot right now the strongest it’s ever been. Felt like the right time to step away. This all happened right after CRED announced they were raising about $900 million from Meta.

Kunal Shah is going to be WhatsApp’s next leader. He built CRED into one of India’s major tech companies, and he apparently has a real care for the people who use these apps. Cathcart wrote that he was really excited to see what Kunal and the team build next. Thanks for letting him serve people everywhere on WhatsApp.

Mark Zuckerberg, Meta’s CEO, jumped in too. He posted it on Facebook. Zuckerberg praised Shah’s background as a builder. He said Kunal brought that kind of mindset, that global perspective exactly what you need to run the world's biggest messaging app. He looked forward to working with Kunal to keep WhatsApp the best service for billions and millions of businesses.

Shah himself posted about the transition. He talked about CRED ’s journey since 2018 when it started up. After this leadership shift, Miten Sampat stepped in as interim CEO right away. He handles strategy and finance now, since 2020. Shah is moving to the global leadership team at Meta, but he keeps his stake in CRED .

He wrote that CRED was ready for its next phase. Stepping out of the operating role? He’s sticking around as a shareholder. His commitment hasn't changed, just the job title shifting.

Then came the part about himself moving to Meta. He said he’ll lead WhatsApp globally there. Meta is in as a minority investor in CRED . No access to member data, which is something. But he felt there was massive potential left for WhatsApp . The gap between what it is today and what it could be? It’s huge. He looked forward to working with Mark, Chris, and the rest of the Meta leadership on this next step for WhatsApp . Will, he thanked him for quietly scaling something everyone relies on and making the handover smooth. Onwards.

Meanwhile, we have the numbers from CRED itself. They now handle over forty percent of India’s credit card bill payments. Nearly 1.7 crore users are actually using the platform every single month. And their lending side? That's expanded a lot too. They manage assets worth around twenty-four thousand crore rupees. It just keeps spinning, doesn't it?
