Mahesh Bhatt's Directing Journey and Relationship with Vikram Bhatt

*Kartoos* was meant to be Mahesh Bhatt’s final directorial chapter, right? But twenty-one years later, he came back to the director's chair for Sadak 2 , starring his daughters, Alia and Pooja. Still, it feels like he just can’t let go of that role anymore. He’s directing again, or so it seems.

Virkam Bhatt, who sees Mahesh as a mentor, spoke exclusively to News18 about this whole situation. He basically said no chance at all for more directing from Mahesh now. “He’s done,” he told us flatly. So, what actually happened with Sadak 2 ? Vikram suggested it was some kind of promise, something owed to Mukesh Bhatt. There was talk that Mahesh only aGreed if no one else was directing anything at all.

“I never talked to him about this directly,” Vikram admitted. “But the feeling I get is that he just took over when there was a need for someone to.” Over those years though, Mahesh kept writing stories for Vikram Kasoor , Raaz , Inteha , even things like Bloody Ishq . He produced a ton of stuff, you know? And wrote scripts.

That workaholic nature is what seems to drive it all. Vikram explained that Mahesh just works because he’s intensely active. Nothing else really occupies his mind; he can just run on for twenty-four hours straight. But that isn't something that lifts his spirit or anything. He doesn't need those things. He’s past that stage, he doesn't need external validation. It’s interesting how all their collaborations have always circled back to horror and thrillers, though.

They never really jammed on lighter stuff? Vikram laughed a little. “Boss,” he called him, “he’s too intense for comedy. I don’t think he thinks about comedy.” But there’s humor in his work. He managed some decent ones like Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke and Duplicate . Still, the core of what he makes isn't comedy or horror, it’s just… intensity.

When they do collaborate, though, Mahesh is big enough to lean into whatever Vikram is doing. He lends support to your ideas, not tries to steer them his way. It’s fabulous how he doesn’t try to lead you where he wants you to go.

There was another part of the story that came up recently. Vikram revealed that even when Mahesh was locked up for two and a half months dealing with some massive cheating case in Rajasthan, he stayed connected to his family. He checked in constantly. It meant a lot. But Vikram wondered what he could have done? “I was in there. How could I just chat with him?”

Mahesh used to talk to the kids, his sister-in-law, his brother-in-law. He knew things weren't fair in that whole mess. He was scared that saying anything provocative would only bring down the powers that be and get Vikram into more trouble. So he held back. He felt helpless. And somewhere in that fear, I think, he just pulled back a bit because he understood it was all about power games.
