Tragedy on the Cauvery River: Five Lost in Drowning

It happened near Muthathi. A real tragedy, really. Five people lost. Four women, drowned in the Cauvery River on a Wednesday evening. It was all down there at this popular tourist spot near Halaguru in Mandya district. Just an awful end to what was supposed to be a simple trip.

The names floating around this story are Chaitra , twenty years old. Shwetha , thirty-eight. Vijayamma , fifty. Priyanka , twenty-eight. And Mahesh , the driver. He was there too. They were all residents of Byadarahalli village. From that side of Ramanagara district. A family, just trying to enjoy a pilgrimage or an excursion, I suppose.

The police came in. Dr Shobharani, the Superintendent of Police for Mandya, he said it happened when they just went into the river for pictures. That’s the immediate core of it. Not some grand conspiracy. Just a slip. A sudden plunge.

It gets messy when you look at what happened next. They had been doing rituals first. Visiting the Kabbalamma Temple. Then prayers at Muthathiraya Temple. All that religious business done. The group, seven people total, they finished those ceremonies and then headed to the riverbank around four-thirty in the afternoon.

They were there for a moment of peace. And then they went down to the Cauvery. Just standing by it, maybe taking pictures of the water, trying to capture that scenic shot.

But things changed fast. Around four forty-five, they moved closer. Entered the water. Trying to see something, perhaps just enjoying the view from the river edge. That’s when Vijayamma slipped. Into a spot. A deep pit in the riverbed. It wasn't deep enough for everyone, maybe. But for her, it was too much.

The panic kicked in immediately. The others started trying to pull her out. Everyone scrambling. Trying to reach her before it was too late. And that’s where the real horror started. As they tried to rescue Vijayamma , they were pulled under themselves. Drowned. It was a chain reaction of fear and desperation. Five lives gone in that moment.

The official side said they thought the water wasn't deep enough for them. Unknowingly, they stepped into an area much deeper than they realized. The riverbed just dropped suddenly. They were swept under there. No warning. Just this sudden depth catching them. It’s a terrible thing, isn’t it? Being fooled by what looks shallow when it isn't.

Home Guards were already stationed near the spot. They had warned everyone. Warnings against entering that water. But people ignore warnings sometimes. Especially when you are in a group, trying to do something, trying to see something. They stepped in anyway. One after another. Trying to save each other. That’s what happened next. A desperate scramble for survival turned into five deaths.

Then there was Ravi. He was the only adult left standing. The one who heard those cries. He heard the calls for help from his family, the screams of distress. He tried to dive in. To pull them out. But the current, the depth it was too much for him alone. Local residents managed to get hold of him. Pulled him back to safety. A small miracle, maybe, just one person saved.

And there was a little girl. Four years old. She was with the family. She got away. Unharmed. Just floating free from that awful scene. That’s a stark contrast to everything else. The loss of five adults and the survival of one tiny child. It sticks with you, doesn't it?

Ravi and his family they weren't local residents right there in Mandya. They were originally from Channapatna. But they had been living in Bengaluru for a while now. Doing that vegetable trade work. They hired a vehicle for this trip. A pilgrimage, an excursion. Just trying to make memories.

The recovery effort started immediately after the tragedy hit. Fire and Emergency Services got involved quickly. They were there when it was needed most. They managed to pull all five bodies from the water. The search and rescue operation kicked off right away. Halaguru police and those emergency teams, they rushed to the scene. A huge mobilization.

The investigation is still moving forward. Preliminary findings point back to that specific spot. That unexpected depression in the riverbed. It wasn't just a random accident. There was an element of being caught unprepared. Lack of awareness about the actual depth. And the desperate, frantic attempts by those involved to pull each other out that’s what sealed the fate for five people.

It’s a sad reminder about water. About how quickly things can change beneath the surface. How easily perception can be tricked. The warnings were there. The bodies are recovered. But the weight of that loss remains heavy in the air around Halaguru and Mandya. A tragic end to what should have been a simple day trip by a family. Just raw, messy reality unfolding on the banks of the Cauvery River.
