Clash Between Trump and Cassidy Over Iran War

Donald Trump and Senator Bill Cassidy had a really intense clash over how the administration was handling the Iran war. It all went down during a closed-door lunch meeting with other Republican senators at the Capitol on Wednesday, according to CNN.

The tension kicked off quickly. Trump seemed genuinely angry about the Senate’s vote just a day earlier where they limited his war powers in Iran. That feeling spilled over into the discussion. The whole lunch was described as "very intense," and that vote that was the central focus of everything.

Things escalated fast. They weren't just talking; they were shouting, repeatedly cutting each other off. It got messy. Sen. Tommy Tuberville of Alabama later confirmed there was a real difference of opinion on Iran between the two men. Sen. Jon Husted called the whole exchange "memorable."

This all happened right after Cassidy voted to formally rebuke Trump’s management of the Iran conflict, backing a resolution aimed at pulling back the president's military authority. It felt like one thing followed another, the political friction building up for weeks.

Speaking to reporters afterward, Cassidy explained where it started. He said Trump was questioning the senators about why they voted for the War Powers Act in the first place. "The President was wondering why people would vote for the War Powers Act," he recounted. "I asked him if that was a rhetorical question, a real question. He just said, 'real.' And then we started talking."

Cassidy added something about feeling interrupted. He felt like he was trying to get answers for the American people, and he wasn't going to be bullied while asking those questions. "I didn’t care to be interrupted," he insisted. "I felt like I was trying to get answers for the American people, and I’m not going to be bullied when I’m trying to get answers for the American people, and so, so it escalated from there. At some point it de-escalated."

The reaction on both sides was explosive. Multiple sources indicated Trump raised his voice visibly during the exchange, while Cassidy shouted back in kind. He admitted he "lost his temper," shouting back at Trump in the same tone and volume as the president.

Cassidy did acknowledge losing control eventually. He said that some of his aides stepped in, saying, "ok, Bill, sit down," and things calmed down then. He blamed his own "Irish" temper for the outburst but stood by what he did.

He drew a line there. “I make no apologies for standing up to the president, if you will, trying to demand that more information be shared with the Senate and more information be shared with the American people,” Cassidy said. He stressed he was fighting for the public, even when talking directly to the president.

The confrontation took a bizarre turn. CNN reported that Trump told Cassidy to sit down, but Cassidy initially refused. That’s when the president called him a "lunatic." Then Cassidy shot back, calling Trump his "brother." Trump immediately pushed back on that claim, saying he wasn't his brother at all. Eventually, Cassidy settled into his seat.

When reporters asked if Trump had actually used the word lunatic, Cassidy didn't deny it. He offered this thought: “Can I imagine that the President called me things that would be said on a school – on a playground? Yeah, I can imagine that.” On the "brother" thing too, he shrugged. "I don’t think that’s really important to the story."

This whole messy scene happened weeks after Trump had backed his primary challenger in Louisiana, effectively ending that senator's career. Since then, Cassidy has become one of the president’s most vocal critics. The friction over Iran was clearly just one flashpoint among many ongoing tensions.
