Jail Escape and Security Failures at Bareilly Central Jail

Bareilly Central Jail. That’s where it happened. An inmate serving a life sentence just walked out.
He scaled the walls. While guards were… watching reels on their phones. The Times of India reported this stuff. He’d been convicted for raping a child. Simple facts, really.
The fallout is immediate, though. Eleven prison officials got suspended right away. That’s what happened. Jailer Neeraj Kumar and Deputy Jailer Vandana Chowdhary were suspended by the Director General (Prisons) PC Meena.
And not just those two. Strong action was recommended against senior jail superintendent Avinash Gautam too. Seven lower-level staff members got suspended following this massive security breach at that Meerut facility, actually. It felt like a pattern.
The DG quoted something simple: "Action has been taken against the personnel for dereliction of duty." That’s what they said.
How did it happen? The guards were distracted. They were busy watching their phones instead of keeping watch over inmates. Embarrassing, really. An embarrassment for the UP police administration, this whole thing. Dinesh used that lapse. He just scaled the wall and got away.
The convict, Dinesh twenty-two years old was sent to work on a farm next to the prison. Along with forty-five other people. Ten guards were supposed to be watching them all. But they weren't watching. They were scrolling.
An official inside the jail told us this. The guards were distracted while on duty. It led directly to this mess for everyone involved.
Dinesh lives in Nanheda village, Amroha. Police are scrambling now. Squads have been formed. Searching is happening across Amroha and wherever they think he might be hiding. Searching everywhere.
This isn't just some isolated event. This feels worse because it’s the second time this has happened since 2024. Two jail breaks. The authorities failed to stop them both times.
October, 2024. A different inmate, Harpal, who was convicted for murder, also escaped somewhat similarly while working on the agricultural farm inside. That was reported back then by PTI.
Central Jail in Bareilly is a sensitive place. It houses some of the worst criminals. High-profile stuff, notorious people. Now this second escape just throws serious questions around. About all the elaborate security measures. The CCTV cameras. The police posts inside the campus. Everything else they put in place.
The repetition… it casts doubt on everything. On how personnel are deployed when they’re outside working. Where is the real oversight?
Investigation is ongoing. They said more action will come once a full report is ready. But you just look at the pattern. You just feel unsettled.
