Sergio Gor on the Bond Between Trump and Modi

Sergio Gor, the US Ambassador to India, brought up something pretty personal on Monday. It was about the bond between Trump and Modi .

He recalled a time when President Trump wanted to call Prime Minister Modi really early, 6 am IST a few months back. He said it just showed how close they were personally.

This story came up while he was speaking at the IX USISPF Leadership Summit in Miami. It happened backstage at a UFC event, somewhere in Miami, a couple of months ago. Trump just suggested calling Modi right then.

Gor told the story to share some warmth between the two leaders. He recounted it like this: “We were there backstage. He just said, ‘Let’s call the Prime Minister (Narendra Modi).’ I was like, ‘It’s 6 am over there.’ And Trump just said, ‘He’ll be up. He’s like me. He doesn’t sleep.’”

The point really seemed to be that friendship doesn't need a rigid schedule. You just pick up the phone and ask how someone is doing. Not everything has to be planned out six weeks ahead of time. That’s what Gor felt was happening there.

He added that Trump holds India in very high regard. He sees Prime Minister Modi differently than he views many other world leaders. There are certain people you schedule things with because they don't hold the same level of connection as the Prime Minister.

This rapport, Gor noted, actually dates back to Trump ’s first term. It’s been helping strengthen the ties between India and the US over time.

They were also talking about trade deals. Negotiations on that proposed India-US aGreement are supposedly in their “final steps.” Just the last phase of discussions left.

Things are moving forward, obviously. Modi is planning a trip to the United States for the G20 Summit in December. And Trump ’s visit to India is expected sometime next year.

The US envoy felt that Washington would be genuinely happy to welcome Prime Minister Modi again. This was partly because Secretary of State Marco Rubio had extended an invitation to Modi earlier this year during his trip to India. It just seems like the relationship is really deepening, moving past the official stuff into something much more personal.
