TVK versus DMK: The Political and Corruption Battle in Tamil Nadu

TVK versus DMK. That’s where things are right now in Tamil Nadu. The Joseph Vijay government is really pushing hard on corruption against the previous DMK regime. Senior ministers, they keep urging the Governor to clear some pending prosecution proposals. It’s all about these allegations against former ministers.

Media reports say that Energy Resources and Law Minister R Nirmalkumar and Higher Education Minister P Viswanathan actually met with Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar. They wanted an early decision on sanctions for prosecuting former DMK ministers and officials. A real move, you know?

One of the main cases they brought up involved the Directorate of Enforcement’s request concerning former Electricity Minister V Senthil Balaji. Allegations about a cash-for-jobs scam hung over him. The TVK government had formally sent a proposal to the Governor about three weeks ago asking for that approval. Sources confirm it was waiting.

They mentioned other names too. Several other former ministers and officials from the DMK government are also awaiting this clearance. Just piling on the requests.

But Raj Bhavan, they spun it differently. They described those meetings simply as separate courtesy calls. In their statements, things felt very different. Assembly Speaker J C D Prabhakar thanked the Governor for handling the opening of the Assembly session. And the two ministers just paid a visit. No mention at all about these pending prosecution discussions in those statements.

Still, this latest push comes right in the middle of the TVK government’s bigger anti-corruption campaign against the former DMK administration. It feels like more than just procedural stuff now.

Remember E V Velu? He was already under the microscope. The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption searched several spots linked to alleged road project irregularities. This came after a complaint filed way back in 2022 by an anti-corruption NGO, Arappor Iyakkam.

Velu dismissed those searches as political vendetta. A classic response. But the TVK side insisted something different. They claimed the action was based on evidence submitted by the complainant. That’s where the friction lies.

Then there’s Senthil Balaji again. He faced criticism from their side regarding alleged recruitment irregularities while he was Electricity Minister. He denied these claims flat out. He argued that the previous DMK government actually reduced financial losses for the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board. And they claimed the recruitment processes were just held up by some model code of conduct nonsense.

This whole push the need for prosecution it’s fueled by the intense political rivalry. The tension between the ruling TVK and the opposition DMK is really escalating now. Both sides are throwing accusations around, saying it's all about political vendetta and corruption, isn't it? It just feels messy.
