Alligator Attack and Grief in the Econlockhatchee River

The grief hit Robert hard. He was already dealing with losing his mother, Barbara, when he heard about Brittany Clark.

He remembered that Sunday vividly. A call came in from her roommate, Jayden. She was trying to explain what was happening. They were just trying to keep Brittany alive, waiting for help. It sounds so awful.

Brittany Clark, 31, was out there with her boyfriend Chance Allison and Jayden swimming in the Econlockhatchee River, down at Little Big Econ State Forest. Just enjoying the water.

Then it happened. Suddenly, this massive alligator a 13-foot thing attacked her. It was right there, in just three feet of water. The New York Post reported it.

Allison tried to fight it off. He desperately tried to get her free from those jaws. But the reptile clamped down on Clark’s arms.

Minutes dragged by. A brutal struggle. Then, finally, the alligator let go. She was pulled to the riverbank. Allison started CPR right away. It wasn't enough. One arm gone. Another terribly mangled. So much blood loss. The report said she likely died before they could get her to a hospital.

Robert, who used to be in the Navy, spoke about this kind of pain. He said the family was already shattered over his mother’s death. This just added another layer of grief.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission got involved. They started looking into it. Two alligators were found nearby. One measured twelve feet long. The other thirteen. DNA testing is happening now to figure out which one did the killing. It's going to take time. A lot of time.
