Antonio Nusa Breaks Record as Norway's Youngest Goalscorer

Antonio Nusa just broke Steffen Iversen’s record on Tuesday. He became Norway’s youngest goalscorer at a major tournament. That’s the headline, right there.

He hit twenty-one years and seventy-four days when it happened. Iversen held that mark for a while. Twenty-three years and two hundred sixteen days back in EURO 2000. A long time ago.

Meanwhile, Erling Haaland stepped up. He restored Norway’s lead with a strike in the 86th minute. It was crucial. It stopped Ivory Coast from trying to come back. Amad Diallo had cancelled out Nusa’s opening goal earlier.

Norway is facing Brazil on Sunday, July 5th. A place in the World Cup quarter-finals hangs in the balance. They’ve been knocked out before 1938 and 1998. Tough history there.

Haaland just took his FIFA tally to five goals. He’s one goal shy of Messi and Mbappé for joint top scorers now. Confidence is flowing from that performance. It’s palpable.

Ivory Coast pushed hard for extra time, though. But Orjan Nyland made a massive save. A superb stop on Diallo’s free-kick. It was headed right for the top corner.

That win against Ivory Coast felt like a vindication. Stale Solbakken got his nod. He had been under serious fire last week after resting Haaland and fielding a weaker squad in that 4-1 thrashing by France. Things finally looked right.

So, who is this guy? Antonio Nusa. The twenty-one-year-old winger for RB Leipzig, playing for the Norway national team. Everyone sees him as one of those shining young talents. Real bright stuff.

He started out way back at Langhus. Then Stabæk’s youth academy took him in at thirteen. First pro contract came May 2020 with that club. He trained with the senior side in early 2021.

Then things got moving quickly. A new three-year deal signed in May. He debuted for Eliteserien against Rosenborg on May 30th. Scored his first league goal against Bodø/Glimt on June 27th. And just a few days later, two goals in his first full start against Viking FK. Just that fast.
