Prime Minister Modi and Sanae Takaichi Meet in New Delhi

Prime Minister Modi and his Japanese counterpart Sanae Takaichi met in New Delhi today, July 2nd. It was an Annual Summit-level chat. They talked about cooperation, trying to sort things out across different areas.

Takaichi is Japan’s first woman PM. This trip is her very first time visiting India. She arrived in New Delhi on Wednesday for a three-day tour. It felt like a big deal, you know? A maiden visit.

She got a grand welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan earlier that day. Modi was there too.

Takaichi posted something online about it. On 'X'. She said she had arrived in Delhi. The capital. And this would be her first time visiting India. It’s been about three years since she took over the PM job in Japan, and personally? Her first trip here. A bit of a milestone.

The talks themselves seemed to focus on heavy stuff. Economic security . Energy security . That was the core. They were aiming to strengthen that whole Japan-India ‘Special Strategic Global Partnership’.

She put it out there: “In discussions with Prime Minister Modi, centering on urgent issues including economic security and energy security, we will aim to deepen the strategic cooperative relationship between Japan and India in light of the current international situation, promote mutually complementary cooperation, and further strengthen the Japan-India ‘Special Strategic Global Partnership’.”

Modi welcomed her back. A warm welcome. He seemed genuinely pleased about it.

He wrote something on 'X' too. “Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, welcome to India. We sincerely welcome your first visit to India. I look forward to exchanging views across a wide range of fields tomorrow to further deepen the Japan-India Special Strategic and Global Partnership.”

And then he added that the two nations need to keep cooperating. For peace. Stability. Prosperity. Across the Indo-Pacific, and beyond. That’s the usual refrain, but it felt important right now.

What was actually on the table? Takaichi’s trip comes just shy of a year since Modi visited Tokyo. And Japan has made a promise they are doubling their investment in New Delhi over the next decade. That kind of commitment needs real follow-through.

Japan is a big ally for India, definitely. Trade numbers reflect that; they hit $27.5 billion in FY2025-26 according to the official figures. But it’s not just about money.

They are pushing on other things too. Trying to build cooperation everywhere, especially when things feel chaotic geopolitically right now. There's this economic move everyone is watching closely: trying to set up trade that settles directly between countries yen for rupees. Cutting out the middleman of the US dollar. It’s an attempt to change how things flow. A real shift in strategy happening behind the scenes, I think.
