Ranbir Kapoor on Marijuana, Addiction, and Memories with Rishi Kapoor

Sumit Tyagi, who is Rishi Kapoor’s line producer on Do Dooni Chaar , actually saw Ranbir Kapoor admitting he smoked marijuana in an interview. It wasn't some big revelation for him, but it brought up a memory of running lines with Rishi Kapoor when they watched that TV segment together.

He said something pretty sharp about the interaction itself. Tyagi recalled how Rishi Kapoor reacted immediately. He told Tyagi that after seeing Ranbir’s admission on TV, Rishi Kapoor asked him to leave, dialed his son, and started yelling. It was a very pointed moment.

“He just saw Ranbir saying he tried marijuana,” Sumit said on The Shivam Podcast . “He called Ranbir up and asked me to get out. Then he just started yelling.” That’s the core of what Tyagi remembers from that time with Rishi Kapoor.

There were other things too, stuff about the set itself. Ranbir had visited the location to meet Neetu Kapoor, but he didn't go back to see his father. There was this sense of terror surrounding him. He mentioned how Neetu ji would joke that when he drank at night, he turned into a typical Punjabi. He said Ranbir was a good man despite all that.

Then there’s the talk about acting and tools. When talking to Koi Moi earlier, Ranbir admitted using marijuana in film school. And again, for getting into character for Rockstar . It wasn't just recreational; he framed it as something functional. He said, “I used it again during Rockstar , but this time as an acting tool.”

He felt it made things real. Getting into the moment with three hundred bored junior artistes posing as a real audience it was hard to feel present. Pot made those moments feel real. A strange justification for using something that many people see differently.

But then he shifted gears entirely, talking about quitting. Ranbir said he stopped smoking pot because he got too busy. He couldn't afford the short-term memory loss that came with it.

He also offered a retrospective view on things. In 2018, when quoted by Koi Moi , he said something heavy: “I have tried drugs when I was in college and got into bad influence. But I realized that nothing will happen in life if I continue with drugs.” A bit of regret mixed in there.

He ended up saying a lot about addiction generally. “Every man makes mistakes,” he noted. “I am addicted to nicotine now, and it’s worse than drugs. And I have an addiction for sweets as well.”

In 2009, when talking to GQ , he had a more balanced idea of what mattered. He admitted he’d done everything alcohol or drugs but now he felt he understood what was important. He reportedly clarified that he hadn't tried any harder substances than those things mentioned before. It just sort of flows like that, doesn't it? Just pieces coming together.
