Explosions Hit Kyiv: Reports and Response

Explosions hit Kyiv early Thursday. Multiple ones.

AFP journalists were hearing things. They reported more than a dozen blasts echoing through central and eastern districts of Kyiv. This happened just as Ukraine’s air force was warning that those ballistic missiles were closing in on the capital.

Mayor Vitali Klitschko jumped onto Telegram pretty quickly to talk about what was happening. He said simply, "Kyiv is under attack from ballistic missiles and UAVs." It felt like a desperate statement.

The damage wasn't just sound. Klitschko mentioned that these attacks managed to hit residential buildings scattered across the city. It was burning up.

He also brought up something about central Shevchenko Boulevard. The roof of a hotel there had caught fire. Images circulating on social media showed flames raging on top of that building. That kind of visual just cuts through the official reports you get later.

Later updates came in, showing the full scope of it. Klitschko confirmed that Kyiv had also faced another ballistic missile strike. Five people were injured in one of the city’s central areas from this attack too.

Residents started moving toward underground metro stations. People were taking shelter there sleeping bags, pets packed up and hunkering down while air raid alerts kept ringing out. That feeling of waiting is heavy.

And then you have the political angle coming in.

He spoke directly about the threat hanging over them. He said something like, “Today, we have information about another massive Russian strike – we have relevant intelligence data.” Then he shifted focus, asking his people in Ukraine to stay safe and protect their families and children.

It’s that kind of layered reality you see the immediate fire and the long game being played simultaneously.

Emergency responders were still out there. They kept trying to rescue people from the damaged buildings while authorities tried to figure out just how bad the overall impact was from all these overnight events. The work doesn't stop.
