Senegal's Goal Record and Tournament Performance

That first-half goal by Diarra immediately broke something. It put Senegal ahead of the record for most goals scored by an African team in one World Cup edition. And then Sarr’s strike? That made them the first African nation to hit ten goals in a single tournament run. Crazy stuff, really.

They managed some results too. One goal against France in their opening group game. Then they lost a bit of ground at MetLife Stadium on June 22nd against Norway, three-two. But they bounced back later; thrashed Iraq five to zero in that final group match at BMO Field in Toronto.

Look at the tally for Senegal across the whole tournament. Sarr is really on fire right now. He’s bagged four goals already. Just a bunch of contributions spread out.

Sarr has done something big, though. Four goals so far this year. That number now equals Roger Milla’s record for most goals scored by an African player in a single World Cup edition. Milla was the oldest scorer at that point, remember?
