Donald Trump on the Panama Canal and US Strategy

Donald Trump was talking about the Panama Canal Wednesday, mostly. He said the United States absolutely would not let China take over that strategic waterway. It was clear he was criticizing how things ended up with Panama in the first place.

Speaking at this dedication ceremony for the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library in North Dakota, he made it clear: the canal should never have been handed over to Panama. That’s where the frustration came from.

He went into specifics about the costs. Trump brought up how Panama immediately started raising transit charges after they took control of the canal. Four times the price for ships, and they didn't even lose a single ship in that deal. Then they raised them again. Tremendous amounts of money made by them. How stupid was that move?

Then he pivoted slightly. He talked about other things too. Mentioning Venezuela, Iran doing equally well there. But the focus snapped back to the biggest threat looming over everything: China planning to seize the Panama Canal. And he insisted: we won’t let that happen. No way.

During the speech, there was a big tribute part too. He paid respect to Theodore Roosevelt, calling him "very special." It felt genuine, I guess.

He spent some time talking about why he admired Roosevelt. He said TR embodied the heart and soul, the fight, the spirit of America. He loved the community, the state. He was one of the few people he truly admired. Not too many, mind you. He made it sound like a very personal reflection there.

Then came the talk about perseverance. He used Roosevelt's life as an example. Americans never give up. He never stopped. Never quit chasing what they wanted. That seemed to be the core message he was pushing forward.

And then, suddenly, the tone shifted again. He started talking about communism. It got intense there. He made a very hard line: the United States would not become a communist country.

“We’re not going to let communists get in our way,” he stated plainly. It felt like an absolute declaration of intent.

He then brought up real threats, trying to frame things starkly. World War I. World War II. Pearl Harbor. September 11th. He suggested that these weren't just historical events. They were something worse. Like a cancer spreading. A bigger threat than all that before. And he stressed you better stop it fast. He kept hammering on the point: we will never let America become communist. It was a very urgent warning woven into the whole address.
