Cristiano Ronaldo's Retirement Speculation and World Cup Debate

The 41-year-old is dealing with a lot of speculation about his international future right now. Everything since Portugal’s dramatic win against Croatia in the Round of 32 seems to have kicked up the debate. He insisted he won’t make any rash decisions about retirement until the tournament is completely over.
“I don’t make reckless decisions,” Ronaldo said after Portugal secured its spot in the Round of 16. “I will decide after the tournament, not now.”
But the talk started earlier this week. His sister, Katia Aveiro, threw out that the expanded 48-team World Cup would be his “last dance.”
“It’s ending soon. The info I have, from a reliable source… this is his last dance.”
She also defended him against all the criticism he’s faced for years. It sounds like something deep there.
“For intelligent people who really like football, they just have to like Ronaldo,” she argued. “They are the ones who end up losing out. He has dominated for more than twenty years. Look at where we are. Look at the Aveiro family… and where we come from. Look at the suffering my mother went through… Do you think criticism will affect our happiness? Never.”
On the pitch, though. That’s where he proved retirement can totally wait.
His third strike of the whole 2026 tournament.
Remarkably, that penalty was actually his only touch inside Croatia’s box during those eighty-one minutes on the field.
