Egg-Pelting Drama: Political Targeting and Legal Action

Mahua Moitra, the Trinamool Congress MP, ended up in the latest wave of egg-pelting drama on Wednesday. It happened right outside her office in Nadia. People just threw eggs at the building while she was meeting workers there.

There were videos of it. Both sides had footage floating around quickly. One clip showed a group of people men and women just standing there, hurling eggs. They were shouting slogans. Traffic kept moving on the road right next to them. It felt messy.

Then there was the second video. That one was from inside the office. Moitra was in it. You could see the eggs hitting the windows. She was filming it on her phone while she sat with some local TMC leaders and party workers.

And then she started talking about it. As the eggs kept hitting the glass, she was heard accusing BJP workers of organizing this whole attack. It just happened. These videos went viral instantly. The TMC immediately claimed that BJP supporters were behind everything. And honestly? there wasn't much immediate reaction from the BJP on the allegation itself.

But Moitra didn’t stop there. In another video, she spoke more about how things went down. She showed the egg stains and bits of vegetable matter that she said hit her during the protest. She pointed right at the police saying they did nothing. They were passive while people targeted the place.

This wasn't just an isolated thing. It felt like part of a pattern. This was the latest in a string of these egg-pelting incidents aimed at TMC leaders since the assembly election results came out.

Remember that earlier stuff? On June 7th, eggs were thrown at a police vehicle carrying Sujoy Hazra in Midnapore. That was over some money allegations regarding housing construction promises.

And it kept going. The same day, eggs were also aimed at Kolkata councillors Bappaditya Dasgupta and Md Jasimuddin when the police escorted them. Udayan Guha got targeted too on June 18th. And TMC leader Vijay Singh? He was pelted with eggs outside an Asansol court on June 19th, with people shouting things like “chor, chor.”

It started feeling coordinated. That’s when the Trinamool Congress decided to step up. They moved the Calcutta High Court. They wanted some kind of judicial intervention over what they saw as targeted attacks on their MPs and MLAs.

The court heard this public interest litigation. A division bench Tapabrata Chakraborty and Partha Sarathi Chatterjee looked at it. They basically said no one should be stripped of their rights just because they were accused or part of a rival camp. Isolated arrests wouldn't fix anything. The state, they stressed, had to stop this growing trend of harassment.

So the court pushed back. They directed the West Bengal government. They had to make sure that police register FIRs every single time eggs are thrown. No matter who is being targeted an accused person or a political opponent.

They asked for something specific too. The government needed to submit an affidavit by July 20. It had to detail how many FIRs were actually lodged and what steps they took to deal with this menace. They also had to set up guidelines. Rules, basically, meant to stop these kinds of incidents from happening again.

The state government pushed back on that direction a bit. They told the bench they didn't support people taking the law into their own hands. And they mentioned arrests had already happened in some of those egg-pelting cases. It was all a bit tangled.
