Supreme Court Plea Regarding CBI Probe and Witness Allegations in Karur Stampede

The Supreme Court finally aGreed to look at something serious on Monday. It’s a plea alleging that Tamil Nadu ministers were actively influencing witnesses during the ongoing CBI probe into the Karur stampede the one where forty-one people died last year.

A small bench of judges, Justices Ahsanuddin Amanullah and Sheel Nagu, aGreed to list this application for hearing on Tuesday. This came after senior advocate Huzefa Ahmadi presented his case. He pointed out that even though the court had ordered the CBI investigation initially, some of the accused people who are now sitting as ministers in the current Tamil Nadu government were allegedly trying to sway witnesses.

"This court directed a CBI probe," Ahmadi submitted before them. "Now, these accused who are ministers in this regime are actively influencing the witnesses. We filed this application."

The bench just said, "We’ll have it tomorrow." They aGreed to hear it on July 7th.

This whole move is happening against another backdrop. The DMK had also filed a plea with the Supreme Court on July 3rd. That one asked for directions to stop leaders from Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, including Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, from making public statements or spreading what they called "false accusations" about the Karur stampede.

The application itself came from DMK organizing secretary RS Bharathi. It pointed out that several people who were initially charged in the stampede case had since become ministers in the Tamil Nadu cabinet following the 2026 Assembly elections.

Bharathi also brought up something specific. He referred to a public statement made by Tamil Nadu minister Aadhav Arjuna. Apparently, he said there was "a score to settle" regarding the Karur incident and claimed the previous DMK government had essentially "killed" the people of Karur through the police action.

So Bharathi asked the CBI for directions. He wanted them to register a complaint and start action against these minister's remarks. The argument was that these statements amounted to tampering with witnesses, impeding the investigation, and influencing things.

Then there’s this whole worry about a proposed visit. Chief Minister Vijay is planning to go to Karur on July 10th. He's expected to meet the families of those who lost their lives and hand out government benefits, like compassionate appointment orders.

The petition argued that when the investigation is still running and it definitely is any direct interaction with witnesses connected to this matter, or with people from the political executive right now, especially while distributing aid related to the incident, creates a real fear. It puts the fairness and independence of the entire investigative process at risk.

This all happens against the backdrop of how the probe itself started. Remember that the Supreme Court ordered the CBI investigation back on October 13th of last year? That was because the tragedy had really shaken everyone nationally. The court felt a fair, unbiased look was necessary.

That order followed a petition filed by Vijay’s TVK group who were pushing for an independent investigation into what happened. Along with telling the CBI to take over the probe, the court set up a three-member supervisory committee. Former Supreme Court judge Ajay Rastogi was put in charge of monitoring things.

The court also suspended the Tamil Nadu government’s plans to appoint a Special Investigation Team or a one-man inquiry commission. Instead, they told the state government to cooperate fully with the central agency doing the work.

And just looking back at the initial event the stampede itself. Police had reported that about twenty-seven thousand people turned up for the rally. That was nearly triple the expected ten thousand attendees. They even blamed a seven-hour delay by Vijay in reaching the venue as part of the problem. Forty-one lives were lost, and that’s what led to the whole messy fallout.
