Zakir Ganai Killed in Anti-Terror Operation in Shopian

Zakir Ganai, a commander for Lashkar-e-Taiba , was killed Wednesday in an encounter with security forces down in Shopian, Jammu and Kashmir. It ended what was supposed to be a four-day anti-terror operation.

The initial detection came from surveillance cameras. They spotted him deep inside a dense orchard there on July 3th. That triggered the whole massive search. Security forces moved in fast.

J&K Police posted something on X confirming his death. It felt like a statement. “You Can Run But You Can’t Hide! One Lashkar terrorist neutralized by SOG Shopian, along with RR and CRPF.” Simple enough, but it carries weight.

His body was found later. That was a big step for the forces, really. A breakthrough in that huge operation. The search itself dragged on. It entered its fifth day on Wednesday, July 8th. Things didn't just stop there.

Earlier reports mentioned gunshots near the site. An unidentified body had been recovered too, somewhere in Chanapora area of Shopian. Just more noise in the background of everything.

Now, the focus has shifted. Security forces are really pushing harder on finding the second guy. Latif. He’s still believed to be hiding out there.

The search is sprawling now. It covers seven villages. Army teams, J&K Police , CRPF all moving through the area. They keep a tight cordon. Combing operations are happening everywhere.

The Army's Victor Force stepped up things. They brought in extra troops. Blocking routes through those thick orchards. Trying to light up the area for night searches. It’s all about making sure they can’t slip away easily.

But there’s a problem, isn't there? That summer foliage. It gets so thick. It offers natural cover. Perfect hiding spots for militants. Makes surveillance just harder.

Officials keep saying that the dense leaves complicate things immensely. They give terrorists a way to evade patrols. A natural camouflage.

The agencies are pointing out that both Ganai and this other guy, Latif, come from South Kashmir’s Kulgam district. That context matters. It's not just random attacks happening somewhere far away.

Ganai is thought to have joined the LeT in 2024. And Latif? He’s said to have been part of that group last year. These are local connections, trying to understand how these networks operate right here.

Shopian itself isn't just some random spot. It has a strategic angle. It links south Kashmir with central Kashmir and that whole Pir Panjal region. It’s a transit point. Important geography.

Security people make it clear: even though foreign terrorists are causing problems lately, dealing with the local operatives is key. Neutralizing guys like Zakir, finding Latif that's how you start dismantling those support networks. Curbing that local recruitment. That seems to be the real target now.
