India's Growing Importance in Global Geopolitics and US-India Relations

Ian Bremmer, the guy who started Eurasia Group, he was talking about India today. He said its importance in global platforms? That’s gonna jump up over the next couple years. It felt like a shift.

This followed something Trump said back there at the G7 summit in Evian, France. A kind of acknowledgment, really. America will step in if things go south for India. If anyone attacks that man Modi they’ll be there to help. That was the gist.

He made it sound like a real deal, you know? Trump addressed reporters while talking to Modi. He was pretty direct about that.

“If anybody attacks that man, we are going to be there to help,” he said. It hung in the air. A very specific kind of reassurance wrapped up in geopolitical threat.

Later on, when Bremmer spoke with CNN-News18, things got a little more abstract. He brought up Mark Carney again. He suggested that any future US president won’t focus just on one thing anymore. Burden sharing. Over the next two years, everyone will see how crucial India is. Middle powers aren't disappearing. They stick around.

That connects to something else happening quietly. India and Canada released a statement recently. They both reaffirmed their shared goal finishing those negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership AGreement. That’s the CEPA thing people have been talking about.

PM Modi and his Canadian counterpart seemed pleased with some of that progress, noted satisfaction with how things were moving toward the aGreement. A bit of cautious optimism there.

And then you get to the side note, the stuff that always gets thrown in. During that press conference, Trump was really showering praise on Modi. It wasn't just policy talk. It got weirdly personal fast. He called him a tough negotiator. Then he went into something much wilder about looks.

He looked at Modi and said, “You look at this man. I’ll give you a lesson.” Then followed it up with the kicker: “He’s the most beautiful-looking man. He looks so nice, like an angel. But actually, he’s as tough as he is a killer… But he looks so good.”

It was that juxtaposition, the sudden shift from hard political talk to something almost absurdly complimentary. Like he was trying to balance being a serious global player with this very strange personal assessment of him. He said Modi gets you by surprise. People say he’s nice. But Trump just slapped on the tough trader, lover of the Indian people, and lover of the USA combo. It just felt messy. A lot of things happening at once.
