Manpreet Singh: The Most-Capped Player in Indian Hockey History

Manpreet Singh just hit something huge in Indian hockey history. He’s now the most-capped player representing the country. That’s 413 international appearances.

He got this milestone during India's FIH Pro League match against Germany on Wednesday. It was a big game, you know? And Manpreet was in it.

Think about that: he passed over former captain and current Hockey India president Dilip Tirkey, who finished his career with 412 caps. A small gap, but it’s history now.

Hockey India announced a cash award for him too. Ten lakh rupees. Just to mark the achievement.

They framed it as this massive moment for Indian hockey celebrating a hundred years of legacy. Manpreet is presented as one of the greatest servants of the game in the modern era. A feat no other Indian player has managed before.

Manpreet himself spoke about it, kind of reflective. He said he felt immense pride. It’s an honor representing India always. Reaching this point just made him extremely happy. He thanked his teammates and Hockey India for everything along the way. Every player shared that field with him contributed to the whole journey.

He also talked about the support system. The highs and lows of a career, there were people there. Teammates stood by him. And family mother, brothers, wife, children unconditional support from the start. That’s what he added.

What really drives him? It’s still that dream to play for India and win medals. Back-to-back Olympics medals. The World Cup chase. That gold dream keeps pushing him every day. His kids motivate him too. Family energy fuels him when he steps onto the field, trying to make them proud.

When you look at the numbers, it’s staggering. With 413 caps, Manpreet is now fifth among all men's international hockey players ever.

John-John Dohmen from Belgium has 481. Teun de Nooijer of the Netherlands is at 453. Eddie Ockenden of Australia is 451. Barry Middleton of Great Britain is 432. Manpreet just sits ahead of them all on that list.

He’s also gone past players in the 400-cap club, like Waseem Ahmed from Pakistan (410) and Jeroen Delmee from the Netherlands (401). It shows real longevity. He's currently the only active men's hockey player globally with over 400 appearances. That speaks volumes about his consistency.

His career has been packed with defining moments too. Remember that tough Olympic debut in London 2012? Then leading India to a bronze medal as captain at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. Those years were intense. He was central to so much. Gold medals at Asian Games, Asia Cups... multiple Champions Trophy wins too.

From those big tournament wins the 2014 and 2022 Asian Games gold to the Olympic bronze medals in Tokyo and Paris he’s been right there in the thick of it. He was always a key piece of that national team puzzle. That kind of sustained excellence is rare, honestly.
