The Rising Cost of Living and Rent in Bengaluru

Rising rent and just the sheer daily costs in Bengaluru are starting to worry a lot of young people living alone there. People are really starting to share online how expensive it’s become just to manage a basic lifestyle in the city now.

One post from a resident named Shruti went totally viral after she opened up about her spending each month in a one-bedroom apartment in HSR Layout. She broke down everything and explained that most of her salary just disappears managing rent and daily needs.

She actually shared how much it costs just to exist in her flat.

In an Instagram video, Shruti answered the questions she gets constantly. “I’m Shruti,” she said in the clip. “Since my one-room story blew up, I get DMs twenty-four seven with the same two questions: what is my rent and where do I stay?”

Then she laid it out. Her rent is Rs 36,000. That’s just to exist in that flat. And she made it clear this number doesn't cover everything else piling up monthly.

She detailed her spending across the board.

  • Rent itself was already thirty-six thousand.
  • Then you had rented appliances costing about five thousand rupees.
  • Electricity and househelp took another four thousand.
  • Food and groceries were somewhere between seven and eight thousand, since she mostly cooks herself at home.
  • Travel cost another chunk about four to five thousand.
  • Fitness stuff like the gym or Pilates added up to maybe five thousand more.

She mentioned extra spending on coffee, eating out, those little cravings that change every month, though she said they don’t really talk about them much. Shopping? They just didn't discuss it.

She summed up her experience living independently there with a kind of wry note: “Adulting in Bangalore is fun. My bank account may disaGree.”

The reaction online was immediate and sharp. People started comparing their own numbers fast.

One user jumped in saying, “Mine is also 36k in HSR but the flat size is tiny.” Another one reacted with pure shock: “Thirty-six! For a one BHK?” It just showed how much that figure hits people.

Then there was another comment, something more pointed. Someone wrote, “So I’m not the only one spending money just on comfort.” And then this followed, almost accusatory, “Sixty thousand? Damn you need someone to fix your personal finance.” It felt less like a shared story and more like an immediate demand for accountability.
