Ismael Kone Injury and Fallout After Canada vs Qatar World Cup Match

Canada’s demolition of Qatar, six-nil at the World Cup, should have been huge. A historic night. But it ended with something much darker for one player: midfielder Ismael Kone .

He was rushed to the hospital. Suspected broken leg. The injury came after a brutal challenge from Qatar's Assim Madibo during that Group B clash in Vancouver on Thursday.

Madibo initially got a yellow card. Just that. But VAR stepped in, you know? It upgraded it to a straight red once they saw how bad the tackle was.

Coach Jesse Marsch seemed totally shaken by the news. He said there was no doubt about how serious the injury was while he was on the bench.

“It was right in front of us,” Marsch told reporters after the game. “Everyone could hear the bone snap.”

He didn’t wait around. “I haven’t spoken to Ismael yet, but he’s at the hospital. He needs surgery. I’m going to go see him after this press conference. We need to figure out what we’re doing for him.”

There was a shadow over everything. That performance by Canada? Landmark, sure. Jonathan David's hat-trick, Cyle Larin’s goal, Nathan Saliba scoring and then the injury. It all got weighed down.

Marsch admitted the whole squad felt it deeply. Everybody was shaken up because of how bad the injury looked, and obviously, Ismael is a big part of the team heart.

“It will be a big loss for us,” he said.

Saliba stepped up right away. He replaced Kone almost immediately. And what did he do? He scored Canada’s fourth goal just seven minutes later. Then he held Kone’s jersey up to the crowd. A tribute, kind of.

Later on, Saliba even got the assist for David's third goal in stoppage time. Just keeping things moving.

But the focus shifted quickly to Qatar. Marsch actually praised Madibo for apologizing to Kone after everything happened. The player came into the dressing room and apologized.

“He apologised to Ismael,” Marsch said. “He came in there and did that.”

“I don’t think he meant such a gruesome situation,” Marsch added.

But the reaction from the Qatar bench? That was different. They protested the red card call. It felt like they were trying to start some kind of fight about it being a red card when, frankly, a clear foul had just broken someone's leg.

Marsch wasn’t impressed by that at all. “I don’t understand a reaction from their entire bench,” he said. “Trying to start a fight over the call when a player actually broke a leg.”

It felt like some strange behavior. Just noise.
