Germany's Dominance: Seven Goals and a Record-Breaking Performance

Germany just absolutely demolished Curacao. Seven goals. It was their opening clash in Houston, and they completely owned it on Sunday.

The group stage game Group E, whatever you call it was pure dominance by the four-time champions. But you know how football is. Hope flickers, right? Livano Comenencia managed to sneak an equalizer, which happened after Felix Nmecha had already put them ahead early in the sixth minute. A small spark of hope for the Blue Wave, though utterly extinguished.

And then there were the goals from the German side. Kai Havertz struck twice. Nico Schlotterbeck, Jamal Musiala, Nathaniel Brown, Deniz Undav they all found the net. Five goals total. Enough to wipe out any faint belief the Curacao fans had. It just felt overwhelming.

They’ve now scored seven goals in those World Cup matches. That puts them above Brazil’s record for most goals by a nation in FIFA history. Germany has 239 goals from 113 World Cup appearances. Brazil sits at 238 over 115 games. It’s a razor-thin difference, but still a record they nudged.

Brazil can still fight back, though. They’ve got another fixture coming up against Haiti in that ongoing tournament being hosted by the USA, Canada and Mexico. That's where Brazil might snatch that record back. Still, it feels like something else entirely right now.

Coach Julian Nagelsmann was talking about it. He said the performance really boosts the team’s confidence. “We really need this self-confidence,” he put it. “I think it grew. It was definitely there but it grew.”

He sounded satisfied, though. “I’m very satisfied with us scoring seven goals and our performance for the most part. A winning start is always important, and we managed that. We played with the right intensity. I think we can have a good tournament,” he added.

But then there’s the context hanging over it. Germany’s run since winning in 2014 has been kind of rough. They didn't make it past the group stage in the previous two editions, remember that?

Nagelsmann admitted something about that reality.

He said the team wasn't nervous when they were playing against overwhelming favorites. “The team was not nervous,” he stated. He shifted focus then, trying to explain the dynamic between the teams. “When you write it down, Curacao had easier conditions. I think we do have high quality on our end, one team has high expectation and the other does not. And that is a bit tricky.” It just feels like there’s more going on than just the scoreboard.
