Violence Erupts at Patna Railway Station During Exam Protest

Violence erupted at Patna’s Pataliputra Railway Station on Saturday night. Hundreds of exam aspirants had blocked the railway tracks. They were protesting what they claimed was inadequate train arrangements for an examination scheduled for Sunday.

Amresh Kumar, who is the Inspector General in charge of the Railway Protection Force for East Central Zone, said more than two hundred young men gathered at the station. They demanded a special train to get them to their exam centers. But even when railway authorities managed to arrange an extra train around two in the morning, the protesters just wouldn't move off the tracks.

Things escalated quickly. The situation turned violent when the police tried to disperse the crowd. People allegedly started throwing stones at security personnel and railway officials. That’s when the police had to use force. They deployed lathi-charges, tear gas shells, and warning shots fired into the air just to try and restore order.

Officials reported that normal train operations finally resumed by about three in the morning. Six people were arrested so far. They are still trying to figure out who else was involved using CCTV footage.

No passengers got hurt. No railway property sustained damage either, thankfully. That’s what authorities said.

But there was more to the story coming out of the official side. A statement came out from the office of the Superintendent of Police, Railway, Patna. It mentioned that eight rounds were also fired in the air just to disperse the mob. And while some security personnel and other officials got hurt from the stone-pelting, no passengers or railway property was damaged at all.

The IG made a different point then. He suggested it looked like many of those young men at the station were anti-social elements. They seemed really intent on causing trouble just to get the exams cancelled. Their antics messed up traffic at the station where two passenger trains and one goods train had been stranded for hours. Other trains that needed to pass through Pataliputra station, they ran them on alternative routes until things settled down.

He also mentioned that the RPF and GRP had already contacted the Patna Police. They are sharing CCTV footage from the station so they can identify everyone involved in the vandalism. Jitendra Rana, the Patna Zone IG, told reporters an FIR would be lodged regarding this whole incident. Those people are being identified through those camera feeds, he said. They will be brought to book.

Meanwhile, when Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Bijendra Prasad Yadav was asked about what happened, his response was pretty simple. He said it was unfortunate that such an event occurred right before a competitive exam. Youngsters should just be mindful of decorum.
