Iranian Officials React to Israeli Strike on Beirut and Peace Talks

A senior Iranian military official said something pretty stark on Sunday. He warned that Israel’s strike hitting Beirut’s southern suburbs wouldn't just be ignored by Tehran. It added this whole layer of uncertainty to that deal, you know, the one US President Donald Trump had hinted would be signed right away.

Brigadier General Mohammad Jafar Asadi, deputy commander of Iran’s top military command, made that point. He told the Defa Press news agency following the attack. “Without a doubt, these crimes will not go unanswered,” he said.

Then there was the chief negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf. He looked at things differently about peace talks entirely. He suggested there was no point continuing those discussions with the United States after what happened in Lebanon. He accused Washington of just failing to keep its promises. Like it either didn't have the will or the ability to do anything about it.

Ghalibaf put this out on X. He wrote something like, “The Zionists’ aggression against Dahieh once again showed that the United States either lacks the will to implement its commitments or lacks the ability to do so.” It felt pointed.

He followed up with a thought, kind of hammering home the point. If you don't have the will or the ability to fulfill what you promised, then why even talk about continuing down this path? That’s what he added. A real punch there.

All this came after Israel hit Beirut’s southern suburbs earlier today. It wasn’t a one-off thing either. This was the second time they struck in a week. Israel claimed it was reacting to Hezbollah fire coming from northern Israel, but they also carried out these broader strikes down in southern Lebanon. Chaos everywhere.

Lebanon’s civil defense agency reported casualties. At least three people were killed in Sunday’s strike on the Ghobeiry area. That area is known as a major Hezbollah stronghold in Beirut’s south. They said they recovered the bodies of three martyrs from under the rubble and six people got hurt, needing hospital care.

The latest escalation just throws everything into sharp focus. Washington and Tehran seem close to some kind of aGreement to finally end this war that has been dragging on for over three months. Iran has always made stopping the fighting in Lebanon a condition for any wider deal with the US. That’s the sticking point, always.

Israel and Hezbollah have been locked in conflict since March 2nd. Back when the Iran-backed group started firing rockets after some of the killings involving Iran’s supreme leader in those US-Israeli strikes days before that. It’s a long history of this back and forth.

Lebanon itself says Israel’s repeated airstrikes and ground moves have taken out more than 3,700 people. Numbers keep piling up.
