Heat Exposure Risks During Pregnancy

Look, pregnancy itself is beautiful, right? A real journey. But throw that into peak summer heat? We’re talking serious risks. Premature delivery . Low birth weight . Stillbirths . And don't forget the congenital heart defects, all those other nasty issues.

It’s not just about the end game. Even in the first trimester, heat exposure? That can cause birth defects. And then you have the whole timeline—premature birth, stillbirths, low birth weight creeping in during the second and third trimesters.

They want precautions against the heat.

We talked to Dr Sonia Golani, a gynaecologist, over at Bhailal Amin General Hospital. She was trying to figure out what women and families actually need to do for the babies when the summer heat hits.

The body itself is struggling, you see. Growing a fetus demands energy. That energy generation creates heat, a slight bump in the core temperature. Natural ways the body tries to cool itself get thrown off balance. Pregnant women just become way more vulnerable to heat. Dehydration hits them hard. And when that happens? Uterine contractions. Early labor. It all links up fast.

Doctors are pushing for these precautions. It’s not optional.

Epigenetic changes . Things that mess with the blood flow to the placenta. Promotes clotting. You need to stay hydrated. You need fluids. You need drinks with electrolytes, especially when you’re sweating buckets because it’s summer heat.

But listen, just chugging water isn’t the whole story. You can’t just drink anything. You gotta be smart about what you consume. Limit the sugar. Cut back on the sodium. Seriously. And caffeine. All those things just pull water out of you, making dehydration worse.

You need regular food and fluid intake. Consistent. Throughout the whole day. And alcohol? Keep that restricted.

Extreme heat can even delay the milk production after delivery, messing with the milk volume.

But here’s the bottom line, I think. Don't ignore them.
