Maritime Security Incidents and US Navy Targeting Near Oman

Moments after the MT Jalveer that vessel carrying twenty Indian seafarers was reportedly targeted by the US Navy near Oman’s Shinas port, things started getting complicated. A video surfaced showing one of the crew members sending out an SOS signal. That call was supposed to inform port authorities about a massive fire raging in the engine room.

“Sir, please hear the coordinates,” that message went out. “Shinas port control, this is from Jalveer. All crew are safe. We have a huge fire in the engine room.” It sounds stark. A desperate signal cutting through the silence of whatever was happening out there.

This whole thing followed some earlier maritime security issues around Oman’s Shinas area. There was chatter about a Guinea-Bissau-flagged vessel involved in some incident nearby. That ship had twenty Indian sailors aboard then, and thankfully, all of them managed to get away safely. A bit of noise, really.

The Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson stepped in, Randhir Jaiswal . He confirmed the attack came from the US Navy stationed in that region. Just stating it happened. No much more context given there.

Mukesh Mangal , Additional Secretary for India’s Shipping Ministry, said they are watching this closely. Coordinating with the MEA. Indian missions abroad. The Indian Navy. And other people involved. Monitoring things. It seems like a constant watch.

The Indian embassy in Oman also spoke up. They learned about an “incident” involving a merchant vessel off Shinas port. They were monitoring it. And they confirmed that getting those crew out was being handled with help from the Royal Navy of Oman . That process, they said, would be finished soon. A slow move, perhaps.

The Forward Seamen’s Union of India shared visuals of MT Jalveer . The reports suggest twenty crew members were on board when things went wrong. But official confirmation? Nothing yet. Just those images floating around.

And this wasn't the first time. This week alone, there have been three reported instances where a vessel with an Indian crew got targeted by the US . Before that happened, two oil tankers had already faced attacks from American forces off the Omani coast. It’s a pattern you start to notice when you look at these things.

Remember the tanker Settebello ? That Palau-flagged ship got hit by a missile while operating near Sohar in the Gulf of Oman. Three Indian seafarers were confirmed dead after that attack. But twenty-one others managed to be rescued from the ship once a fire reported on board. A different kind of tragedy unfolding side by side.

The US military released a video showing the moment they struck that tanker. They claimed it was a “precision” strike. The reasoning given was that the vessel allegedly failed to follow instructions and was carrying oil from Iran. That’s the story they put out there regarding the targeting.

This all happened just a day after another incident involving an oil tanker. The MT Marivex , also Palau-flagged, was operating near the strategically important Strait of Hormuz when it was hit by a projectile off the Omani coast. The crew got evacuated because they reported a fire on board. It keeps happening.

And then there’s this cargo vessel carrying what they called “essential goods.” That ship was struck by an American projectile while making its way from Khasab, across the Strait of Hormuz, heading toward Sirik in Iran. Iranian state broadcaster IRIB reported that hit. Just another piece added to the picture. Things are moving fast out there.
