The Story Behind Jab We Met and Imtiaz Ali's Journey

Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor’s Jab We Met . It’s one of those films everyone loves, right? Still has a massive following. But you know what else is interesting? Bobby Deol was the first choice. Not just some casual mention.

Imtiaz Ali actually opened up about this recently. He revealed that Bobby still jokes around about being replaced in the movie. It’s funny how things loop back, isn't it?

He spoke to Times Now about it. He said something like, “At that point I was just an unreleased director. My film hadn’t really done well.” Then he shifts. “Bobby and I, we would do anything for each other.”

When someone asked if that still holds true now? He just shrugged. “Yeah, yeah.”

They had spoken again, very recently. Just now, when asked when they last talked? He paused. “Just now.”

Then the thing about Bobby is always there. Every time he speaks up, it’s like… ‘Yaar tumne aisa kiya mere saath.’ Buddy, you did this to me. It keeps going on. The complaints and grievances just keep rolling around.

Bobby Deol also opened up a bit on Aap Ki Adalat . He talked about a really painful time in his career. Being replaced by Shahid Kapoor in Jab We Met felt like a real blow. He said that film came at a moment when he desperately needed something strong. A big project, you know? Especially since he had helped bring Imtiaz Ali and Kareena Kapoor onto the board in the first place.

“That story is done now,” he said. “We’re friends.” There was this weight in his voice. “My heart got broken because I needed a film like that during that phase of my career.” It just felt unfinished.

Imtiaz recalled something about his connection with Sunny Deol too. The faith that actor placed in him, even when Imtiaz didn’t have much experience then. He said he was there because of Sunny Deol.

“He didn’t ask me what I had done,” Imtiaz mentioned. “He didn’t ask about the years doing theatre, or directing TV for seven years, or what I studied. Nothing.” Just this. He just asked to tell him the story. And Imtiaz told him the story.

The New Cinematic Journey

Now, shifting gears a bit. The director is gearing up for something new. Main Vaapas Aaunga . It’s coming out June 12th.

In Imtiaz Ali's world, love isn't just a feeling floating around. It lives in those quick moments. In conversations that get left hanging. Memories stick around forever.

Main Vaapas Aaunga is exploring exactly that kind of story. He’s bringing Diljit Dosanjh, Naseeruddin Shah, Vedang Raina and Sharvari into it. It promises something emotional. Layered stuff. A cinematic experience you feel deep in your bones.

And look at the music part. After getting reactions to the teaser and the music? They released the trailer now. It gives you a peek into this world built on longing. On belonging. It also brings back that magic of their old collaborations. A. R. Rahman, Irshad Kamil, and Imtiaz Ali. Those soundtracks they made together always stick with you somehow.
