NEET-UG Controversy: Accountability, Reforms, and Multiple Exams

The whole thing about NEET-UG is really hitting a snag. It’s not just some one-off problem anymore.

Government officials actually showed up before parliamentary panels recently to talk about it. The focus was on how the exams were conducted under the NMC Act, 2019 . Specifically looking at the 'Organisational Structure' and who is responsible within the Health and Family Welfare Ministry.

The Standing Committee on Health and Family Welfare heard these views. It’s part of their bigger look at how these regulatory bodies actually function.

People like NTA Director General Abhishek Singh, Higher Education Secretary Vineet Joshi, and the NMC Chairman Abhijat C Sheth were there. They laid out what had happened, what inquiries were done, and what steps were taken after the alleged paper leak controversy. Ram Gopal Yadav was heading up this committee.

This wasn’t the first time things came up. It’s actually the third time in recent weeks that officials faced these panels concerning the cancellation of the May NEET-UG exam because of those leaks. And now it’s rescheduled for June 21st.

NEET-UG, you know, India's biggest medical entrance test it’s usually done just once a year. But that one in May got scrapped after these accusations surfaced.

The MPs felt this wasn't sustainable. They brought up the recurring nature of the incidents. Like, why keeps happening?

Sources told the news agency they noted similar controversies back in 2024 and even again in 2026. It makes you wonder about accountability. Are the current punishments actually enough to stop these things from happening again?

One source put it plainly: "All the MPs discussed needing to move forward because this isn't a one-time thing. It’s become a recurring problem."

They asked tough questions: who is accountable here? How do we fix accountability? Is the punishment serious enough?

Proposed Solutions and Demands

Then came the big suggestion. They proposed holding NEET-UG multiple times a year two or three sessions. The idea was that students would have more chances to clear it without getting knocked out by things outside their control.

"Members suggested multiple exams throughout the year," another source added. "At least two or three. When a student misses an entire year of education because of someone else’s mistake, the impact is really deep."

The government officials were told this was on the table for review.

Student groups have been pushing this demand constantly. It's not new. Back in July 2018, then Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar actually announced that NTA would run both JEE Main and NEET-UG twice annually. But that never actually happened. Just didn't get implemented.

The National Medical Commission pushed back a bit. In 2023, they said holding it twice a year wouldn't work. Why? Because all the MBBS seats are managed through one big counseling process anyway. It’s all tied up.

But things are shifting. Officials also mentioned that the government is looking at introducing Computer-Based Testing, or CBT , for NEET from the next cycle. The MPs, though, stressed something else too. A smooth transition. Especially for students living in rural areas. There are huge issues with digital access and infrastructure there. And they need to make sure exam papers are available in regional languages. That’s a massive hurdle.
