Trinamool Congress Internal Crisis and Rebel MPs' Demands

The Trinamool Congress is really in deep trouble right now. It’s having one of its biggest internal crises following that Assembly election loss, you know? There’s a whole wave of resignations and outright rebellion happening among MLAs and MPs. It's causing serious political churn inside the party.

Amid all this noise, some rebel MPs took a step. They sent a letter to Speaker Om Birla on May 18th. The point was pretty clear: they claimed Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar should be recognized as the party’s Chief Whip in the Lok Sabha.

News18 got access to that letter on Friday morning. It carried signatures from nineteen rebel TMC MPs. Names like Satabdi Roy, Bapi Haldar, Dr Sharmila Sarkar a long list of names signed it. Plus others: Prasun Bandyopadhyay, Jagadish Barma Basunia, Asit Kumar Mal, Arup Chakraborty, Rachna Banerjee, Saayoni Ghosh... and a bunch more.

Arup Chakraborty spoke up about this letter to CNN-News18. He was pretty pointed. “We sent this letter to the speaker,” he said. “To save TMC’s reputation.” Then he turned it around, looking straight at Mamata. “Why was Mamata silent when all this was happening? She formed the party; she is the leader. Why did she stay quiet? Now the train has left the station.”

He kept going. “BJP will do their job. TMC will do theirs. Other parties will do theirs. BJP is ready to help us for the nation.” It felt like a sharp pivot, cutting right through the usual party lines.

The core of the dispute in that letter was about Dastidar’s position. The MPs argued that when Banerjee removed him as Chief Whip and put Kalyan Banerjee in that spot, that communication never actually got to the Lok Sabha secretariat. So, for the purpose of the Lok Sabha, Dastidar should still hold the title. This meant no anti-defection law would apply to them a huge sticking point.

After these dissident MPs basically told the Speaker they supported the NDA, Kakoli asserted something else. She claimed she was still the legitimate Chief Whip in the Lok Sabha. Her removal hadn't been formally communicated anywhere official. That really complicated things for the rebels.

Meanwhile, Ghosh talked about what’s happening outside of just internal party politics. Things were getting worse in Bengal. She pointed to financial messes, the collapse in health and education systems, even the film industry. It felt like everything was falling apart.

She said there was this policy meant for the poor people... a pro-people agenda. But now? The work has been suboptimal. Suboptimal.

The rebels weren't just talking about titles though. They were throwing shade at Mamata Banerjee herself. They alleged she’d become completely disconnected from what was actually happening on the ground, both in government and within the party structure. This allowed corruption to run wild.

And there was that whole issue with her nephew, Abhishek Banerjee. The rebels objected hard to the growing influence he had. They claimed the TMC National General Secretary the second-in-command had been given way too much power. It felt like a grab for control, you know?

So, this internal mess in the Trinamool Congress just keeps intensifying. All these resignations and statements from these rebel leaders are fueling massive speculation about where the party is heading. People are wondering about some big political realignment possibilities. It’s pure chaos right now.
