Fake Signature Case: Abhishek Banerjee and the CID Investigation

Fake Signature Case

Abhishek Banerjee. Trinamool Congress general secretary. He was hauled in for questioning by the West Bengal CID. Over five hours of it. All connected to this signature mismatch thing. It involves some key resolution submitted in the state Assembly.

The Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha MP, that’s him. Questioned at the CID headquarters in Kolkata on Thursday. Five and a half hours total. And listen. The sources inside the CID said they weren't happy with his answers. Multiple inconsistencies popped up during the interrogation. Things just didn't line up.

The whole focus of it seemed to be this meeting resolution book. Investigators kept hitting that point. They said it’s totally untraceable. No paper trail found, even after digging through the party’s central office and that Camac Street office. Banerjee just wasn't giving a satisfactory answer about it. He sidestepped questions about the resolution book involving other party MLAs. Which only made things worse. Further scrutiny followed immediately.

Then they dug into the actual meeting itself. The one where some big decisions were supposedly made. Things like selecting the Leader of the Opposition, for instance. Investigators wanted to know who was actually there. Which MLAs were present? And if someone absent had authorized signatures on their behalf. When exactly did those signatures get made? That’s what they pushed on him.

The agency kept pushing. Seeking clarity on something else too. Did the MLAs who missed the meeting tell party leaders beforehand? Or were separate chats held with them later? CID sources basically said the responses to these points weren't acceptable at all. It felt like a massive tangle of excuses and denials.

After that long session, what happened? Banerjee left Bhabani Bhavan. Then he went straight to Mamata Banerjee’s residence. Just that. A quick move. The CID then directed him to show up again. Noon on June 14th. A second appearance was scheduled.

This whole mess stems from allegations. Signatures of some Trinamool Congress MLAs didn't match their originals on an Assembly resolution. It wasn't just random paper shuffling. This document was tied to appointments. Positions in the Assembly. Especially those seats reserved for the Opposition. Big stuff, you understand?

The CID started poking around because they found discrepancies first. Mismatches in signatures submitted with that resolution. Investigators have since been collecting handwriting samples from several legislators. Preliminary findings suggested mismatches in some of them. It’s not just a formality; there were actual differences spotted.

Banerjee eventually showed up before the CID. This happened after the Calcutta High Court made the call. The court directed him to cooperate with the investigation. He had sought more time before this. Skipped previous summonses, citing health issues and other commitments. It’s always something about those kinds of delays. Things get pushed around.
