Raghubir Yadav: Journey from Uncertainty to Stardom

Raghubir Yadav wasn't just some familiar face on TV and cinema screens, you know? Long before that, his life was totally uncertain. Now he’s celebrated for those memorable performances, but getting there? That wasn't easy at all.

He looked back at those rough years in a chat with ABP Live. He talked about sleeping on bus stands, just scraping by for food. It sounds brutal. But he said that his real passion performing that kept him going through some of the absolute toughest phases.

How did he even get into theatre? Unexpectedly. He felt like he was going to fail exams, so he left home with a friend and headed to Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh. That’s where things started shifting. There, he bumped into a theatre troupe run by Madanlal Kapoor, Annu Kapoor’s father.

He recalled those days vividly. It wasn't smooth. He said something like: “First we watched a play, then we just slept at the bus stand. The next morning, we went to my friend’s uncle’s house. Then, after three or four days, my friend just left me. So I went to Madanlal Kapoor, the owner of the theatre company, and asked what to do next. I told him I could sing, so I auditioned for ‘Badli Teri Nazar To Nazare Badal Gaye.’ And he hired me for two and a half rupees a day.”

That job offered some kind of stability, maybe that was enough. But life was still incredibly challenging. He mentioned the promised wages rarely made it to him whole. Getting basic meals became a real struggle.

He detailed how they managed things. “They said two and a half rupees, but I usually got one rupee. If it rained, sometimes they’d give me just eight annas. We would buy bread for four annas and tomatoes for four annas, make that simple roti chutney meal, and we'd put it on a tree. There were also gamblers around there. When they lost their bets, they’d eat our food. So we often slept hungry in the evenings.”

Six months later, Yadav eventually went back home. But even that wasn't the end of the story. An uncomfortable remark from a relative made him leave again. It took almost twenty years before he managed to come back home once more. By then? He had already earned serious acclaim and awards for his work in films like Massey Sahib .

Over those years, he built up an incredible body of work. He became a household name with movies like Mungerilal Ke Haseen Sapne , and later, people started praising him for stuff like Salaam Bombay! , Lagaan , Peepli Live , Newton , and Sui Dhaaga .

More recently, he was in The Narmada Story , directed by Zaigham Imam. That film, which stars Mukesh Tiwari and Ashwini Kalsekar, hit theaters on June 12th.

And fans are still waiting for more. They can look forward to seeing him in the upcoming season of Panchayat . Directed by Deepak Kumar Mishra, it’s got Jitendra Kumar, Neena Gupta, Faisal Malik, and Chandan Roy. Expected later this year.
