UPSC Prelims Results and Next Steps for Civil Services 2026

UPSC Prelims results finally out. That’s what the Commission dropped on their site, upsc.gov.in.

It means the preliminary stage for 2026 is over. For those who managed to qualify 13,343 folks now eligible for the next hurdle: the Mains exam. It’s a big step forward, but it doesn't feel like the finish line at all.

We have some numbers floating around here too. About 1,016 posts were actually notified under this whole Civil Services setup this year. But look at the scale of things: nearly eight point one lakh candidates registered for the exam. That’s a lot. Yet only about five lakh people showed up on the actual examination day. Sixty-seven percent attendance? That kind of gap just sticks in your head, doesn't it?

Based on these preliminary results, the picture is pretty bleak, honestly. Only around two point six seven percent seem to have cleared the initial cut. The rest ninety-seven point three three percent haven't made it past this first gate. And remember, all of this qualification is provisional. It’s not final.

So what happens now? If you scraped through the Prelims, don't just sit back and wait. You need to move immediately into preparation for the Mains. There’s no time to waste.

The paperwork starts right away. You have to fill out that DAF-1 form on the Commission's site. Then, once you manage to clear those mains questions, there’s another hoop the DAF-2 form. And don't forget the interview part. The stuff they ask during the interview often pulls directly from what you put in those forms. It links everything together.

There’s a window for people to submit fees, about Rs 200, just to get into the Civil Services (Main) Exam 2026. Except for certain groups Female candidates, PwBD, SC, and ST candidates are fee-exempted, obviously. But even those need to keep moving.

During that time, you also have to sort out details: Scribe requirements, any assistive device needs, picking a large font option for the Mains paper, and finally, choosing your Cadre Preference. All of this has to be done before the deadline hits. June 19th to the 28th is the window for all those submissions on their website.

It's easy to get caught up in just clearing the Prelims. That’s a huge mistake. The selection process isn't some single hurdle, it’s three parts: prelims, mains, and that final interview stage. Clearing the first bit doesn't guarantee you anything at all about success down the line.

The statistics really hammer this point home. Most candidates who bother to sit for the preliminary exam just don't make it to the final merit list. Estimates suggest almost ninety-eight point five percent of those who appear are excluded from the ultimate selection pool. It’s a tough climb, and frankly, that kind of reality needs to sink in before anyone starts preparing.
