Netherlands vs Japan World Cup 2026 Preview and Analysis

The Netherlands kick off their World Cup 2026 run in a sticky Group F game against Japan at the AT&T Stadium on Sunday. It’s immediately obvious there isn't much room for error, especially since Sweden and Tunisia are also tangled up in this group.

But things aren't smooth for the Oranje right now. Injuries have really messed with their preparations. Even though they look like favorites on paper under Koeman, some key players are missing.

The Dutch squad is running lean. Bart Verbruggen, the keeper, is a major question mark. He had hip trouble during warm-ups. If he can’t shake it off in time, Mark Flekken is expected to step in, and Robin Roefs might be on the cards too.

Koeman has lost more than just defenders, though. Jurrien Timber pulled out of the squad. And then there are the midfielders: Jerdy Schouten, Matthijs de Ligt, Xavi Simons all ruled out due to injury. It’s a lot of holes.

Still, you look at the core. Virgil van Dijk is still captaining them. De Jong and Gravenberch hold the midfield line together, though. They still have strength there.

Japan, on the other hand, they arrive in decent shape despite their own troubles. Wataru Endo had to miss out entirely after that foot injury, and he decided to retire from international football. That leaves a gap.

They also lack some firepower. Kaoru Mitoma is gone. That puts more pressure on Takefusa Kubo, Junya Ito, and Ayase Ueda. Those three are the ones who have been putting in work during qualifying 33 goal involvements. They’re supposed to be the attacking focus now.

There's also that interesting angle about Yuto Nagatomo. If he plays, it could actually make history for him. First Asian footballer to appear at five separate World Cups.

Team Formations

The structure they are running with is pretty defined: Netherlands uses a 4-2-3-1 setup. Verbruggen (if fit); Dumfries, Van Hecke, Van Dijk, Van de Ven; De Jong, Gravenberch; Summerville, Reijnders, Gakpo; and Depay up front.

Japan is running a 3-4-2-1 formation. Suzuki plays defense, with Taniguchi, Watanabe, H. Ito providing support. Doan, Kamada, Tanaka, Nakamura are in the back four. And then J. Ito, Kubo, and Ueda for the attack.

Historical Context

It’s interesting how this history plays out. The Netherlands have managed to stay unbeaten against Japan in three previous meetings two wins and one draw. They met in '10, where the Dutch edged a narrow 1-0 win. Their most recent friendly was a 2-2 draw back in '13.

History leans toward the Dutch, you know that. They haven't lost a World Cup opener since 1938. But Japan is rising up now. They have this disciplined style, high energy. It makes them genuinely dangerous opponents, despite their own injuries bleeding into the picture.

With both sides missing key players and everyone just wanting to avoid an opening defeat, it feels like this match is going to be something else entirely. A real nail-biter.

Prediction: Netherlands 1-1 Japan.
