Cooling Down in Indian Summer: Ayurvedic Home Remedies

Indian summer isn’t just about the heat itself. It’s really about how your body tries to keep up with it. You move through those humid streets, and the discomfort you feel? That’s not just outside stuff. Your body is sending a quiet signal something needs attention. Balance.
In Ayurveda, they link this internal heat directly to something called pitta dosha . Think of it as the fire element in your system. When that fire gets too intense, everything shifts: mood changes, digestion suffers, energy just evaporates.
So what do you actually do to cool things down? We talked to Chitra BK, who is the Chief of Dietetics over at KIMS Hospitals in Bengaluru. She gave us some perspective on how to handle it.
Home Remedies for Summer Heat
What really works better when the temperature spikes?
People are leaning heavily on home remedies these days. Staying healthy, hydrated it’s all about finding something that feels right. Ash gourd juice and methi seed water pop up a lot during the summer. But they don't do the same thing for everyone. They work in totally different ways.
Ash Gourd Juice
Ash gourd juice is cooling. It hydrates you nicely. And it has fiber. It’s kind of a water-cluster vegetable, which helps with retention. Plus, there are probiotics in it that look after gut health. It’s decent for weight management too. Some folks find it helps reduce belly fat. It packs vitamins and antioxidants keeps you fresh when the heat is peaking.
It’s great to start the day with it because summer brings dehydration and fatigue. Ash gourd juice digests easily, and some say it naturally reduces body heat. Good if you struggle with indigestion too.
Many nutritionists point out that ash gourd also has antimicrobial properties. It helps balance electrolytes in the system. Because it’s so cooling, it gets recommended when people are sweating way too much or dealing with heat boils, or just general acidity during these months.
Methi Seed Water
Then there's methi seed water. That’s a different approach entirely. It’s cleansing. And you should drink it in the summer because it’s one of those major coolants for the body. It regulates insulin sensitivity. Digestion gets smoother naturally. Helps manage weight. There are effects on women’s hormones too, and hair growth kicks in. It just has a ton of benefits rooted deep in old healing practices.
The methi seeds themselves are packed fiber, folic acid, Vitamin A, C. They hold so many minerals. Tiny golden brown seeds that handle a lot of things. When you mix them with water, it’s versatile. Easy to fit into the daily routine.
Choosing the Right Remedy
When you look at which one is better for summer? That depends entirely on what your body is screaming for right now. If you are trying to shed excess heat, if hydration is the main goal, or just pure cooling ash gourd juice might be the move. It’s a good starting point.
But if your focus shifts toward clearing out toxins, improving digestion, or balancing that metabolism then moderate methi seed water consumption could help. Both drinks have their own angles. The real key isn't picking one over the other. You need to think about consuming both thoughtfully. In right amounts. As part of a balanced diet for summer.
