A Reflection on Characters and Television Storytelling

Alpana wrote something pretty personal. She said, “Rupali equals Anupama. Anupama equals Rupali. I saw a person turn into a character when we met. We first met in a look test, and I was already wondering, how could Monisha become Anupama? Even when we started shooting together, there was this doubt, just how could Monisha become Anupama?”

Then there was this follow-up thought. She watched the first episode and it just blew all her questions away. A really good character, played by a human, and she’s still playing it, mixed up with everything. A mother, a wife, a daughter, all those responsibilities, the whole purpose of life—that’s what made Anupama. Happy birthday, and go fulfill Papa’s dream!”

Another frame showed them in vibrant traditional outfits, just laughing during a festive sequence.

There was another shot where Rupali was in bridal wear, and Alpana just joined her with smiles.

And then some lighter moments. Alpana was wearing a sheet mask, and Rupali was leaning in for a selfie. Another candid shot just caught them laughing, off-camera.

Six years on air now. It just keeps being one of the most watched shows on Indian television.

Rupali plays the main role, Anupamaa . She embodies a homemaker who slowly figures out her voice and her independence.

The show also had Sudhanshu Pandey and Gaurav Khanna in it. Rajan Shahi produced it all.
