Amit Shah's Review on Security and Law and Order in West Bengal
Amit Shah, Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, chaired a high-level review on Sunday. It was about the law and order situation in West Bengal. The whole thing was an outline for strengthening internal security, policing, and the criminal justice system there.
The focus wasn’t just general stuff. Counter-terrorism came up big. Border security. Narcotics control. Police modernization. Cyber security. And women's safety too. Shah told officials they had to implement things quickly. Within a set timeframe.
West Bengal sits right on international borders Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan. That makes it incredibly sensitive from a national security viewpoint. There are old challenges there about cross-border terrorism, illegal infiltration, drug routes running through, organized crime. It’s a really difficult spot geographically.
Two main messages came out of that review, sources say. First, the Centre wants to kill the idea that West Bengal is just some transit route for terrorist networks. That has to go. Second, they want a much stronger security architecture. This means using specialized agencies with real investigative and operational muscle.
So why this overhaul? The need was clear. They are talking about creating things like a Special Investigation Agency SIA . It’s supposed to operate at the state level, kind of like the NIA but focused locally. Why SIA? Because you need deep dives into bomb blasts and explosive cases. These incidents cause massive law-and-order headaches in the state. The central agency handles some terror stuff, sure, but investigating every single blast or suspected attack is just not feasible for them. So the SIA steps in to handle those detailed investigations locally while still linking up with central forces when needed.
Officials pointed out that this isn't new. Similar agencies already exist in places like Jammu and Kashmir, Gujarat, and a few other states. It’s just about making sure West Bengal has the tools it needs right now.
Then there’s the Anti-Terrorist Squad . This is another piece of the puzzle. It will be a dedicated operational unit for counter-terrorism work. Its main job? Hunting down terror threats. What they are focusing on involves tracking movements and stopping plots.
And don't forget narcotics. The focus shifted heavily to strengthening the Anti-Narcotics Task Force , or ANTF. They plan to pump more manpower into it. Expand its operational reach. This is aimed squarely at fighting drug trafficking along those border routes. Getting better coordination between the state police, central agencies, and intelligence outfits is key here.
Basically, this whole push the SIA, the ATS setup, beefing up the ANTF it's all part of a bigger strategy. It’s about building a much tougher security framework for West Bengal overall. Alongside modernizing the police and better cyber defenses and tightening border enforcement, the goal is to create a system that can actually handle terrorism, terror financing, drug trade, and organized crime effectively. It has to be robust.
