Punjab Police's Anti-Drug Effort: Yudh Nashian Virudh Results and Strategy

The Punjab Police rolled out this big anti-drug effort Yudh Nashian Virudh . It’s been running for 500 days now. And it seems to have made some serious dents in the drug trade, plus got communities involved somehow.
It really hinges on three things: heavy enforcement , getting people into the community, and education. That's how they’re trying to fight this thing.
When the 500-day mark hit, Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav stepped up to talk about what happened. He said it was one of the toughest crackdowns the state has ever seen. It wasn't just about raids; it involved serious intelligence work and really pushing community policing tactics. The result? Record arrests. Massive seizures. They actually started dismantling those organized networks.
Numbers are huge, though. Since March 1st, 2025, they’ve registered over 52,432 FIRs under the NDPS Act alone. And they’ve caught more than 68,850 drug traffickers. That's a lot of arrests in a short time.
But look at this: he mentioned that among those caught, 629 major dealers were picked up. These guys had huge hauls more than two kilos of heroin each. We’re talking about assets worth around twelve crore rupees just from those seizures. That kind of money flow stops something.
The government side stepped in too. Bhagwant Mann’s administration made a move that seemed aimed at people facing trouble, not just criminals. They gave 10,917 individuals immunity from prosecution under Section 64A of the NDPS Act. This meant they could seek treatment and rehab instead of just facing jail time. A different angle entirely.
Simultaneously, the police weren't just arresting people; they were hitting where the money was made. They attached and confiscated properties. Things acquired through drug proceeds. It’s about cutting off the financial backbone of these cartels.
ADGP Nilabh Kishore, who heads up the Anti-Narcotics Task Force ANTF spoke about this wealth aspect. He pointed out that they managed to attach or confiscate properties valued at nearly ₹319 crore belonging to traffickers during this time. They even demolished illegal structures built on government land using these illicit funds. It’s a clear signal, he said. Punjab Police has zero tolerance for drug dealers and the dirty money they generate.
Then there's the public side of things. A big part of the success seems tied to people speaking up. The Safe Punjab Anti-Drug Helpline 97791-00200 it got a lot of calls. Forty-six thousand, three hundred forty-two anonymous tips came in. That led to 22,960 arrests. It shows people are finally trusting the police enough to report what they see. Community policing working, you know?
And it’s not just on the streets or with property seizures. They are trying to build resilience. They're talking about working with over 24,000 Village Defence Committees. That involves more than one-point-two lakh people. These committees are supposed to spot suspicious activity and help gather intel right at the village level.
There’s also this side of awareness work happening everywhere. Sports events, youth programs, public meetings all organized with schools and community leaders. The goal is clearly building up the community so they can resist substance abuse better.
Yadav kept hammering home that it's not over. Even after these 500 days, the police aren’t stopping. He stressed that they will keep pushing harder against those big drug syndicates. They need to sharpen investigations to really tear down those trafficking routes and keep reinforcing community policing. It needs people to step up and become active stakeholders in making Punjab truly drug-free.
