India-US Trade Agreement Nears Completion

Piyush Goyal, the Union Commerce and Industry Minister , said on Monday that India is nearly done with the first phase of the trade aGreement with the United States. He basically implied that the big sticking points between the two sides are mostly settled now.

Some members of the US delegation have already arrived in India. Others are expected later this week, ahead of those scheduled meetings on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th of June. Goyal stressed that the "major points" in the negotiations have been settled.

It sounds like things are finally moving.

He brought up comments from US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor. Gor had mentioned that ninety-nine percent of the details for the Interim Trade AGreement are already finalized. That’s a big number.

The minister expressed real confidence. He thinks they can wrap up this first chunk of the bilateral deal very soon. Then they can start talking about something much bigger.

"I am fully confident that we will conclude the first tranche of the bilateral trade aGreement with the US as soon as possible," Goyal noted. Then he added that they will sign it and then move on to figuring out how to build an even broader trade deal moving forward.

The focus, though, isn't just on the paperwork. Sources whispered that Indian negotiators are zeroing in on preferential access among competitors. Tariff relief from those US Section 301 investigations is sitting right on top of the agenda for the talks with the US trade team.

The US side is led by Chief Negotiator Brendan Lynch. He’ll be talking with India’s team, headed by Additional Secretary Darpan Jain. They are aiming to finalize the specifics of the interim pact while pushing forward on market access, non-tariff measures, customs stuff, investment promotion, and economic security alignment.

This current round of talks follows an earlier visit. India sent a delegation to Washington from April 20th to 23rd, led by Jain. They were building on that framework. Remember the Joint Statement they issued back in February 2026? That was where both sides aGreed on a setup for an Interim AGreement, focusing on mutual benefits, and still keeping the door open for that larger bilateral deal.

Ambassador Gor, speaking Friday at the US-India TRUST Initiative at IIT Delhi, reiterated that the aGreement would be finalized soon. He said India had sent a team to Washington DC just last week to nail down that final one percent of the deal. He anticipates that the trade deal will be signed in the next few weeks, maybe months.

The numbers don't lie either. Bilateral goods and services trade has ballooned, jumping from twenty billion dollars to over two hundred and twenty billion in just the last two decades. It makes sense they want to close this initial part quickly.
