Internal Conflict and Fallout within Trinamool Congress

The internal mess inside the Trinamool Congress really spilled out on Monday. They kicked out two MLAs, Ritabrata Bandyopadhyay and Sandipan Saha, over some alleged anti-party stuff. It all kicked off because they refused to sign a letter proposing the name for the Leader of the Opposition.

The party pointed fingers immediately. They claimed these MLAs kept missing meetings. Getting involved in things that weren't party business.

“It has also been observed that you have engaged in activities and made statements that are prejudicial to the interests of AITC,” the notices said. A very formal way of saying they were doing something wrong.

And the consequence? They stripped the two legislators of any position, responsibility, or privilege from the TMC right from the date those notices were issued. TMC ’s tally of MLAs dropped from eighty to seventy-eight. A small number, but it felt like a big hit.

Sandipan Saha, the ex-TMC MLA from Entally, didn’t just sit there. He hit back. He said the party never had any moral conduct to begin with.

“In this party, anyone who speaks of morality will be deemed to be engaging in anti-party activity,” he told ANI. He seemed quite pleased, actually.

“If, today, we have been suspended from the party for the sake of upholding morality, we are actually quite pleased. Performing moral acts is indeed the duty of every legislator, which is precisely what we have done.” That was a sharp thing to say.

This whole situation just feeds into the larger rot. Sandipan Saha is just the latest voice railing against Mamata Banerjee’s leadership, especially after the party’s massive defeat in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. He’d refused to attend a key TMC meeting before, claiming it was called without proper protocols.

There’s an existential crisis brewing, it feels like. Several leaders have started publicly questioning Mamata and Abhishek Banerjee’s direction.

Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar stepped down from all organizational roles. She brought up some issues that just didn't align with how democracy should actually work. She also talked about “indecent behaviour” towards women workers and pointed fingers at the growing influence of I-PAC.

Then you have Sukhendu Sekhar Roy. He openly questioned how the organization was functioning. He alleged a complete collapse of internal democracy, saying corruption was institutionalized. He felt the TMC was heading toward disintegration because they just failed to introspect after those electoral setbacks.

Partha Chatterjee, one of the faces you recognize from the TMC , he just blamed Mamata for ignoring corruption and for the party’s loss. He said the party had become completely “detached with the masses.”

Riju Dutta got action too. He was expelled after praising the BJP’s efforts to stop the post-poll violence. He claimed his earlier remarks against the BJP were made under TMC pressure. It just shows how messy the lines are getting.

Arunava Sen, another MLA from Howrah, he was pretty direct. He said if he were the Chief Minister, he would have resigned immediately after such a defeat. A tough stance.

Dev, the TMC MP and actor, he accused the leadership of making empty promises. It signaled a total breakdown in how they communicated internally. He claimed they were spreading misinformation about a flood mitigation project that was supposed to be long delayed.

Manoj Tiwary, the former cricketer, he called the TMC government “corrupt” and said they deserved to be removed. He congratulated the BJP on forming the government and seemed relieved by the TMC ’s exit.

Niamot Sheikh, the MLA from Murshidabad, told *The Indian Express* that the leadership just allowed factionalism to take over, and that’s how they lost everything.

The cracks weren't just in the expulsion. They were visible everywhere. More than three-fourths of the MLAs refused to show up for a crucial meeting at Mamata Banerjee’s residence. That’s a massive signal, isn’t it?

And then there was the fallout from the municipal board. The Diamond Harbour municipal board was dissolved on Sunday. Nine MLAs quit their positions. Another big setback for the party, just piling up. It all feels very unstable right now.
