Internal Rebellion and Leadership Crisis in Trinamool Congress

Ritabrata Banerjee, expelled by the Trinamool Congress for what they called "anti-party activities," is suddenly at the heart of something brewing. It’s not just a minor spat anymore. It’s a real rebellion happening inside the party’s ranks.

This started over some alleged forged signatures on a resolution. A document meant to back the TMC’s nominee for Leader of Opposition. But now it’s snowballed. It’s turned into a potential challenge right against the party leadership itself.

CNN-News18 picked up on this. They say more than fifty of the party’s eighty MLAs are gearing up. They want to stake a claim. They want to be the "real Trinamool." And they want to back Banerjee for the LoP spot in the West Bengal Assembly, even though the party officially picked Sobhondeb Chattopadhyay.

This whole situation is making people wonder about a much bigger split. Political observers are already drawing parallels. They’re looking at the kind of internal ruptures you see in Maharashtra politics these days.

The core of the fight was that resolution. It was about signatures. Banerjee and his colleague, Sandipan Saha, claimed signatures had been forged. They went straight to the Assembly Speaker, Ratindra Bose, asking for an inquiry.

That complaint kicked off a CID investigation. Some TMC MLAs got questioned. Some of them even started claiming the signatures on that document weren't theirs.

The TMC, naturally, didn't see it as a complaint. They saw it as indiscipline. Party leaders argued that the MLAs should have sorted things out internally. Instead of going to the constitutional authorities.

And then, within hours of this issue exploding, Banerjee and Saha were suspended. Then expelled. Out of the party.

But the story doesn't end there. The significance of Banerjee’s name has shifted. It’s no longer just about a forged signature. It’s become a test of authority inside the TMC. Especially now, after the party lost the recent assembly elections.

Suspended leader Riju Dutta made some heavy claims. He said a lot of MLAs have started rallying behind Banerjee as an alternative LoP choice. He gave some numbers. A meeting happened on Monday afternoon at the Gateway Hotel. More than fifty legislators were there. They were saying they were the "real Trinamool." They promised to submit a new list to the Speaker. A different Leader of the Opposition.

And then there was the talk about the BJP. Some parliamentarians are exploring a switch.

Dutta claimed there are already some bookings. Twelve Lok Sabha MPs. Six Rajya Sabha MPs. They’ve made "pencil bookings" with the BJP. The party isn't taking them right now. But the calls keep coming. Every day. “Please take our booking.”

This dissent seems wider than just the two expelled members. There are reports that a lot of TMC MLAs skipped recent party meetings. That fuels the idea that dissatisfaction is running deeper. It’s not just about Banerjee and Saha.

The party dismisses any talk of a split. But those absences from key meetings? That raises serious eyebrows.

For Banerjee to actually grab the LoP post, he needs serious backing. He needs a sizeable bloc of legislators openly siding with him. The whole thing hinges on whether that support actually materializes.

Chattopadhyay had already raised this before. He complained that even though the TMC had enough seats, his recognition as LoP got stuck. All because of questions about those documents and signatures.

If a big group of MLAs openly backs Banerjee, the Speaker faces a real headache. Competing claims over who actually represents the opposition benches.

Whether Banerjee ends up as LoP? We don't know yet. But the fact that his name is now being floated as an alternative to the official choice shows how serious this crisis is for the TMC right now. It’s a fight over control. Over leadership.
