NEET Paper Leak: System Gaps, Outrage, and Tragic Fallout

“There are gaps in the system,” National Testing Agency Director General Abhishek Singh admitted. He said they are working to plug those holes. This came amid all the screaming over the alleged NEET paper leak. It’s caused real outrage. Protests. And tragically, a rise in student suicides across the country.
In an interview with Al Jazeera, Singh basically admitted the system had shortcomings. He took responsibility. He wouldn't just shrug it off. He assured everyone that the rescheduled National Eligibility cum Entrance Test, the NEET , is coming up on June 21. He promised tighter security. More transparency. That’s the deal.
The whole mess started when the government cancelled the May 3 exam. Why? Allegations of a paper leak. Think about it. Nearly twenty-two lakh students had sat for that test. Massive numbers.
Then things got uglier. Right after the exam wrapped up, they found it. About 120 questions had been floating around on Telegram channels. Some of them looked like actual guess papers. And the connections? Reports surfaced that these papers were being sold. Some were going for as much as five lakh rupees in Sikar alone. That place was already under a spotlight for weirdly high success rates back in 2024.
The NTA, they tried to defend the integrity of the whole process at first. But later, they had to pull the plug. They said suspicious stuff had been shared with federal agencies.
How does the agency even run? It’s a skeleton crew, really. Information shared by the Ministry of Education back in 2024 said they only have about twenty-two people on deputation. Thirty-eight contractual workers. And 138 outsourced staff. It sounds thin.
Keshav Agarwal, the VP of the Coaching Federation of India, he hit a nerve. He said the NTA is just overwhelmed. You can’t run exams for millions of students yearly when the testing body itself is running on so little manpower and infrastructure.
There are weak spots everywhere. From setting the papers and printing them to moving them around. Transportation. Storage. Papers often show up at the centers days before the actual test. That’s where the vulnerability lives.
And this latest uproar drags up old ghosts. It brings back the NEET-UG 2024 situation. Remember that? More than eighty students reportedly got perfect scores, 720 out of 720. That just fueled suspicion among teachers and aspirants. Police looked into it later. Arrests happened in Bihar and Jharkhand. But the test itself wasn't cancelled then.
But this time, the fallout is different. Devastating.
For the students and families, it’s been brutal. In Rajasthan, in Jhunjhunu, Rajesh Kumar, a labourer, mourned his son, Pradeep. He was twenty-one. Pradeep died by suicide after the exam was cancelled. He had spent years preparing to be a doctor. He’d scored over 650 marks this year, enough for a government medical seat. To pay for that dream, Rajesh sold ancestral land. He burned through nearly all his savings on coaching and fees. That’s the reality.
The confidence is gone, too. Harsh Dubey, a candidate from Uttar Pradesh, narrowly missed a medical seat last year. He said the constant allegations of leaks just crushed him. He said it left students emotionally empty. Unable to focus. Educators are struggling just trying to prepare again for the new dates. The public anger? It’s turned into huge political demands for fixing this whole system.
If you or someone you know is struggling right now, there are people who can help. Aasra in Mumbai. Sneha in Chennai. Sumaitri in Delhi. Cooj in Goa. Jeevan in Jamshedpur. Pratheeksha in Kochi. Maithri in Kochi. Roshni in Hyderabad. Lifeline in Kolkata. Reach out.
