Karan Johar's Debut at the MET Gala and the Legacy of Raja Ravi Varma

Karan Johar made his big debut at the MET Gala. It was a moment he framed as life finally coming full circle, in the most unexpected ways.

He showed up wearing something inspired by Raja Ravi Varma’s art, a design by Manish Malhotra for the “Costume Art” theme. He posted the look on Instagram.

“From loving cinema and costume as a wide-eyed dreamer to standing on the steps of THE Met Gala…life really does come full circle in the most unexpected ways,” he wrote.

It wasn’t just about fashion for him, he said.

His statement outfit, which he called a “moving canvas,” featured hand-painted bits and a long cape. It was all about storytelling.

He talked about taking the legacy of Raja Ravi Varma and letting it live again. Not on canvas this time, but in motion. Representing India, our culture, our art, our storytelling on those global steps.

He mentioned the thirty years of friendship and collaboration with Manish Malhotra. Grateful for that core memory.

The MET Gala itself, you know, it’s the annual thing. A huge haute couture fundraiser for the Costume Institute at the Met on Fifth Avenue.

It’s widely seen as this massive, glamorous fashion spectacle.

And now this. That shift. It felt huge.
