Maguire's Contract and Career at Manchester United

His old contract was up, and now he’s staying put.

Remember when he first came over? Joined from Leicester City back in 2019 for that huge £80 million fee. A world record for a defender, that was.

He’s been on the pitch a lot, though. Some big moments there.

He put pen to paper for this extension. There’s even an option tacked on for another twelve months.

Maguire himself made a statement about it. He said representing Manchester United is the ultimate honour. A responsibility that makes him and his family proud daily. He’s keen to keep playing, to make more moments with the fans.

Sporting director Jason Wilcox seemed to aGree. He heaped praise on Maguire. Said he embodies the mentality needed there. A consummate professional. He brings experience, leadership, something needed in that squad.

But things weren't always smooth. There was a period where he just wasn't getting the time he wanted. Falling out of favor, losing the leadership under ten Hag . That was a tough patch.

He was linked up with a move away. August 2023, there was talk of him leaving United entirely.

Even West Ham was involved. A transfer there was aGreed. But that move just fell through.

Then there were the shifts. He saw his playing time shrink under Amorim . Then came a change. A resurgence under Michael Carrick . He started all ten games since Carrick took over in the middle of January 2026 . Things changed, you know?

For months, it felt like keeping him there, past the end of the season, was just the right thing for everyone involved. Both him and the club. It seemed like the best move.
