Ritabrata Banerjee's Political Maneuver in West Bengal

Ritabrata Banerjee , an expelled leader from the Trinamool Congress , just landed the big one. He’s officially the Leader of the Opposition in the new 18th West Bengal Legislative Assembly. It’s a total shakeup of who holds the power in the state.
This whole thing came after a massive display of force inside the Assembly itself. He managed to get the Speaker to back him up, pulling the support of 59 of the state’s 80 TMC MLAs . It felt like a genuine legislative coup.
This isn't just some random split. It rips the main opposition party apart. And Banerjee throws himself right into the middle of Bengal’s tough political fight. He effectively carved out a significant chunk of the TMC’s elected members for himself. It’s one of the biggest parliamentary maneuvers we’ve seen in Bengal politics recently.
The way this happened shows how calculated things are. Banerjee’s rise to LoP isn't sudden. It’s a long, messy story of shifting loyalties and survival. He wasn't just some newcomer.
He started out way back in the Left movement . A real firebrand, known for student politics, SFI stuff. Then he moved into the Rajya Sabha, a CPI(M) MP . Things changed, obviously. There was a huge fallout, an expulsion from the CPI(M) back in 2017. He pivoted hard, aligning with the TMC . He focused on the union and tribal work within the party.
Now, he’s this, the leader of a massive breakaway group. It’s a real demonstration of political grit, real realpolitik.
The immediate trigger for this whole power grab was the internal fracturing of the TMC . Factional warfare. It was already simmering under the surface.
After getting the Speaker’s blessing, Banerjee threw a press conference. He needed to set boundaries immediately. He made it clear who was in charge of the new legislative front. He was very careful with his words.
He basically said Mamata Banerjee is still the main figure. She remains the undisputed leader of the whole political consciousness. He stressed that his group wasn't trying to cause chaos. No. They were going to be a constructive, responsible opposition. They just wanted to hold the government accountable in the Assembly.
But the real move, the thing that really defines this whole stunt, was how he handled the party hierarchy. He hit back at the top.
Banerjee was blunt. He made it crystal clear that Abhishek Banerjee , the National General Secretary, had zero authority in this new setup. He deliberately kept the party founder out of the critique. This was smart. It painted his side not as rebels. Not as turncoats. They were positioning themselves as the true guardians of Mamata Banerjee’s original political legacy. It shielded them from instant backlash while systematically undermining the authority of the party's established leadership.
The effect of this elevation is huge. It throws the entire political scene into legal quicksand. The orthodox TMC leadership, the people loyal to the party headquarters, are reacting fast. They’re mobilizing their legal teams.
They’re gearing up for a massive court battle. They want to challenge the whole thing. They are questioning the legality of an expelled person leading a parliamentary group. They’re digging into the anti-defection rules.
This fight is going to be exhausting. It’s a war of attrition over who actually owns those 59 seats. The pressure is immense. It threatens to freeze up the actual work happening in the 18th Assembly.
All those state budgets. Crucial public policies waiting for a vote. Everything is hanging in the balance now. Banerjee’s bold move has made the fight for Bengal’s political future a legal nightmare, all under the harsh light of court scrutiny and public worry.
