Sumukhi Suresh on the Struggle of Women in Comedy

Sumukhi Suresh, you know, she’s one of those female stand-up comedians everyone loves in India. But recently, she opened up about the sheer struggle women face just trying to act in this country.

She talked about how women get cancelled every single second online. The kind of comments people just pile up on their social media posts. It’s relentless.

When people asked her how male comics, like Samay Raina or Vir Das, got cancelled—they got cancelled for different reasons, obviously. She didn’t just give a simple answer. She was really firm.

She said, “Actually, we get cancelled every day. Have you actually looked at the comment sections? That’s where it comes down to.”

This isn't just some small female comic issue. It’s a female issue in any industry, really. Cancellation just messes up opportunities. It blocks access. It stops exposure.

Then she shifted the focus. With the male comics, there’s this mass hysteria. Then there’s a callout. But for women? It’s different. People call us prostitutes. So many offensive things in those comments. We get attacked for how we look. For what we say.

It’s this whole dynamic. If men start at zero, women in every industry start way lower. Minus ten, maybe minus twelve, or even minus fourteen. And we keep bouncing back. Back to minus three or minus five. It just keeps happening.

She pushed on. It’s a privileged thought, if you think male comics are getting cancelled because they became some kind of tees maar khan . That’s what they have. But look at the comments. See the real situation. The system just doesn't favour us. And we’re still fine. None of us are saying, ‘How come?’

She asked, can we get the same kind of adulation for female comics? She said we really need to prove it first. Then maybe we get the respect. But with a man, a little bit of abusing and bakdi is enough. That culture of bakdi is way more common among men. So you have to take time to accept that women are also doing bakdi . She added that.

And then there’s her background. Sumukhi Suresh. She’s a comedian, an actor, a writer, a show host. It’s a lot. She started her journey in Bengaluru. She initially worked at a food testing and certification company. Not comedy.

She realized it wasn't her thing fast. So she left that full-time job. And that’s when she started chasing the stand-up comedy path. She built up recognition through sketches. She writes them. She performs them. Live shows, social media—it’s all there. A real journey, messy, you know?
