Air India CEO Change and Financial Crisis

Campbell Wilson stepped down as Air India CEO. He’s staying on until they find someone new, according to what we heard.

This whole mess is happening while the airline is bleeding money. Losses are piling up, especially with the West Asia situation going on and all the scrutiny following that terrible Ahmedabad crash last year. That crash? Twenty-sixy people died. It sticks with everything.

Sources told the Hindustan Times that the board actually accepted the resignation last week. They just want a smooth handover.

The hunt for a new boss started in January. Wilson himself wanted out before his contract naturally ended. He joined the airline back in September 2022, on that five-year deal, right after Air India got privatized that same year.

What’s really pressing is the financial side. The airline is dealing with airspace restrictions now. And costs are just climbing. All because of the US-Israeli war on Iran. That war forced them onto longer routes, more stops, fuel burn spiking everywhere. International routes are hit hardest by this.

Then there’s the shadow of Ahmedabad. The June 12th crash. It’s a huge weight. Air India is looking at a record loss this year. We’re talking maybe twenty thousand crore rupees lost in FY 2026, according to the reports circulating.

An industry insider, talking to the HT , gave some advice on who they need. They need someone with real credibility. Global experience running a massive full-service carrier. And they need someone who actually understands low-cost stuff, you know, Air India Express. Someone close to retirement, maybe within five years.

They are talking to candidates now. There are advanced talks happening. A big meeting is scheduled for next week to hammer this out. But still, no name has been put forward for Wilson’s replacement.

The timing feels tied up with the disaster. A source suggested the new CEO won't be announced until the full report on the AI 171 crash comes out. That’s the bottleneck.

It’s not just Air India, though. India’s biggest airline is going through a similar shift. IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers resigned March 10th. Personal reasons. He got replaced by William Walsh, the former British Airways chief. Just another shift happening across the board.
